Hey there, fellow 56M!
Ft. Benning, in general, is very different depending on the section you're in. There are four main sections: Main Post, Harmony Church, Sand Hill, and Kelley Hill.
Main Post is the first part of Ft. Benning you'll experience. It's got the nicest parts of Ft. Benning, in my opinion. Post Headquarters is there, along with Soldier's Plaza (where you'll do the majority of your inprocessing), the Airborne School, and the Manuever Captain's Career Course (MCCC). If you want to see more Captains than you can shake a stick at, head over to Building 4! Also, 3rd Ranger Battalion and RSTB are on main post, behind "The Brown Fence". You'll know it when you see it.
Harmony Church is the new home of the Armor School. Tankers, Scouts, and Armor Officers do their Basic and MOS training here. You'll also find the Ranger Training Brigade, Air Assault course, and the Marine Tanker training area. Lots of training going on there.
Sand Hill is the long-standing Home of the Infantry. Basic and OSUT is conducted here, without exception.
And Kelley Hill, the oft-forgotten portion, is my Area of Operations. We're the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Sledgehammer! We're the only FORSCOM unit on Ft. Benning, and as such are mostly left to ourselves. We live in our own little world "On The Hill".
Do you have orders to the Garrison on Ft. Benning? I would be happy to provide a 56M's perspective on PCS'ing here. Most of my knowledge is current.

Depends on the person...I've visited numerous times and it's grown over the past 5 years.
Nice post close to Atlanta and the surrounding area has its benefits.

I have looked at the websites but I don't know when it was last updated. I'd much rather get feedback from real people, so thank you!

Fort Benning is a nice post. Really hot in the summers though. They are one of the premier training posts in the nation, having both Infantry and Armor schools there. They also have Airborne, Air Assault, sniper school, ranger school, etc... So as far as Garrison goes, Benning is pretty top notch, with a lot of state of the art training facilities.
As for the surrounding area, Columbus has bad parts and good parts. The Downtown area is pretty nice.
