I prioritize my mental health by prioritizing me. This could be in the form of practicing mindfulness or yoga, doing something that brings me joy, or just by saying no. As a pleaser, I would often say yes to others when asked to do something, attend an event, etc. This would frequently leave me feeling like I've spread myself too thin. I was the one that others turned to for so many things because they knew I was dependable. Recently, I have learned to just say no. And I found that the world didn't end when I did this. Also, I didn't disappoint anyone. I thought I wouldn't be valued if I said no. But that just isn't the case. I am still asked to assist with things or to attend gatherings/events, but saying no gives me more freedom and more choice in my own life. I don't feel obligated to be at the beck and call of everyone.

My wife and I have made it a point to surround ourselves with drama-free people and to walk away and not engage with people who are toxic to our lives in some way, including family. It may mean my friend and family pool is limited, but it is quality. It has also a good example to my sons about who and who not to get entangled with and how to stand on their own when necessary. One result is that my sons have understood about, but not had to be involved in, the family drama and abuse I grew up with.

I ensure I stay committed to my therapy regiment. I use the free Headspace subscription and Im sure to journal alot. I also use the libby app linked with my local library to read books to understand my mental health differences.

I try to look at things in a way that others may look at them. I know my way of thinking is not the only way to look at different ways to get things done. This gives me a different ways and options to look at and cope with things that matter in every day life. By doing things this way it helps with my PTSD.

The hardest thing i did was actually ask for help and go through therapy and when one psychologist turned out to be a blame innocent folks in my life i went to another one that sent someone to my house to help me go through the events that were causing issues in my life. It was when they saw me and did not try to blame folks that weren't part of my trauma or brush me off that i found some order. I am all for getting help for others in the same way and not jumping to conclusions over the type of trauma.

One thing that I personally do to combat my PTSD is to go on long walks. Places where there won't be many people around or distractions just nature. Helps me clear my head, reset and move on to another day. Another option is to find someone who is there for you whether it be a best friend, spouse or fellow service member. I've noticed with my girlfriend that when I start to "drift off" she's right there to bring me back to now before it get to be to late. Having a solid support system and safety plan is crucial. If you don't have that option, there are groups of vets & civilians that will just listen. It sucks yet is relieving at time to speak of the stuff that bothers you most. I wish all of you a healthy and safe life moving forward. Please reach out to someone if your falling. It's not embarrassing to ask for help, it takes courage.

There are a few things i do to help me. Someone told me a long time ago "Don't believe everything you think", This has helped me many times especially when it is negative thoughts. I also try to look at what I have in stead of what I don't have. I push myself to do something I enjoy when depression hits. Helping someone else also lifts my spirit. Most importantly I talk to someone when I am having a tough time. I also share with someone when things are going good. Isolation and silence will keep me from living and enjoying life.
