I actively maintain and foster an attitude of gratitude and thankfulness and journal what I am grateful for in the early morning hours of waking.
Recently, our church's magazine had a very convicting and thoughtful question: "What if you woke up the next day and only had what you thanked the Lord God Almighty for the night before, what would you have found remaining?" By taking time to write down what I am thankful for, it does not leave room for wallowing, sadness, pity parties, etc. The "good" outweighs the "bad" and I begin the day refreshed!
(As I write this now, I am listening to the sweet pitter-patter of rain as we are experiencing the gentle rain -sooo desperately needed in Southern California - from the breakup of Hurricane Kay.)

I try to meditate daily and get myself in a very quiet space and I listen for answers.

After I got out in 2014 was a void in my memory. So many things went down for me, from insomnia to other flashbacks from the sandbox in Iraq. To stay focused, I decided to run five days a week. That helped me expel all the ghosts that were in my head. I won two 5k runs.

Prayer, meditation, and regular exercise are ways I am able to prioritize my mental health. I have also found volunteering for a program will definitely put your problems on the backburner. You realize how grateful you are in that moment.

I try to take walks in the park. Fresh air, kids playing sports, people walking/jogging/running or walking dogs gets my mind off my own problems and I get better awareness of others and the BIG PICTURE. Trees, flowers, birds, dirt--take your shoes off and walk on grass is great medicine!!

By March this year I was feeling worn down by the long gray days and long dark evenings. I needed some color in my life. So I made a quilt using brightly colored scraps. (It got a blue ribbon at our county fair last week.) Besides that, I'm the pianist for Sunday services at church every week. I have fun with it and so far nobody has asked me to stop. In an effort to keep my brain alive, I'm rereading "Si le grain ne meurt," a memoir by André Gide. It may not actually help the brain but I'm happy that I can still read French.

I used to be a workaholic. Not for money but mainly because I am the sole breadwinner for my family of 6 with a wife and 4 small children. After years of working full time plus overtime in addition to covering every shift under the moon whether it was first, second, or even third shift I began to feel the fatigue. Fatigue from work. Fatigue from making family time. Fatigue from lack of sleep from an inconsistent sleep pattern. Fatigue from homework, school projects, and fundraisers. I still had to make time for my spouse. When all that was done; I was mentally spent. Where was the time for myself. So I made a conscious decision to make time for me. Every month I have a me day. I sleep in late, eat my favorite foods, and I do an activity that I enjoy. Whether it be fishing, or watching a good movie, or going bowling with the guys. It has made a tremendous difference in my stress level. It gives me something to look forward to without taking away from my other responsibilities. Best decision I ever made.

To prioritize my mental health I insure my medication regiment is followed and discussed with my providers should problems arise.
