I play chess, about 6 games on the computer, and do crossword puzzles, at least another 6 crosswords a day, every day. I am also remodeling our kitchen right now that helps me stay in shape and keep mentally alert. Relaxing with my dear Wife in the evenings is also plus.
Self-care is the most important thing you can do for your mental health. I am a mental health therapist and I know how beneficial taking time out of your busy week to do self-care is. Self-care can be anything that changes 1% of your routine in a positive direction. You do not have to wait for life to get easy to be happy but you do have to consciously set aside time for yourself to be happy!

My wife and I walk daily to clear our heads, vent and reconnect as a couple. We’ve been doing this for over 20 years with success. Walking really helps in stressful situations.

Minimize contact with others and write. Since I started on VA disability, I have written a musical, a screenplay, and several songs. I used to be social. Now, I prefer not to be.

I take little breaks so I can focus on what matters to me and remind myself why I am doing the task at hand.
