I'm applying to a foreign study program in Beijing. My current unit lacks an S-2 (jacked up, I know) so our admin had to contact BDE S-2. All they told me was that travel to China is allowed but might affect future renewal of a TS-SCI. How true is this, and is it specific to China because of security concerns. Is it specific to INDOPACOM? For instance, if I apply instead to a study program in Austria would it be better?

Do you speak mandarin Chinese? If so I wouldn't write of this opportunity yet. Bet definitely document everything.

I do, sir. The program I am thinking of applying to is a language study program intended to improve my ability to speak and write in Mandarin.

Since my retirement I work in an area that requires SCI. I do know that in this day and age, foreign travel is very highly scrutinized. If it were me, I would not chance it.

I would go for Austria.

I do agree with MAJ Eugene Chu with documenting everything if you do choose China.
