My reenlistment window opens in March, I would like to get advice on what are the better options available. I have a GREAT Retention NCO, but I would like to have more opinions from outside.

What would you advice to do to a 1st term Junior Enlisted?

There are so many options for you today versus when I joined 26 years ago. I was young and wanted to do the "fun" stuff and joined the Infantry. I don't regret being an 11B I met some life long friends and had fun and learned how to lead. At the same time I could have listened to the folks at MEPS that tried to get me into satellite communications or MI or other positions that could have put me in a position to have different job in the civilian world. So look for something that you think you would enjoy doing for the rest of your life in the civilian world because the army is going to give you the best training for your future. Best of luck in your search for a new MOS.

SPC Charles Zeller at the same time, having that many options makes the decision a little bit harder.

Change over to an Intel MOS that you are qualified for, Morse Code and Languages are one trick ponies but a Network Computer MOS is interesting and although they may not promote really quickly to the higher ranks, you do make SGT and SSG Quickly especially if you are doing well in the core items like PT and generally a good soldier. The real up side is when you get out you have a Clearance that can get you a great job. I had a position 4 months before I retired as an SFC and have been a defense contractor for L-3 Communications for going on 16 years. Intel MOS's dont go to the field much either, you tend to work in a large office like NSA.

SFC Martin Applegate being in Ft. Meade, I've seen a lot of Soldiers ETSing just to stay here making almost the double that they were doing here. So, yes, I've thought about it.

MOS is based on your scores so the best thing is to see where you rate, followed by what you want to do and what unit are available and talk to your wife if you are married cause she too will be serving.

CPT Pedro Meza I'm glad my wife has supported me with everything, I just told her yesterday that I might ask for Europe and she told me that she is going anywhere with me. That gives me some relieve in that aspect.
The tension is on making the right decision.

SGT(P) (Join to see) - your entrance test gave you scores that will determine what MOS you are qualified for, you can also now take the test again to increase MOS potential, see you S-3.

I would get a technical mos might not sound exciting but getting training as a linguist has a very high potential for hire there are a lot of companies including the FBI looking for linguists that can hold security cclearance

SGT Robert Andrews I thought about it but then I looked for promotion points and it looks like I would hit my RCP if I reclass to 35P.

WHat I recommend is look into two things  1st look into shortages for MOS. That will normally give you lower
promotion point requirements. The other
thing I would look into is where you will
be stationed some places have a higher
cost of living.
Get with your retention NCO to figure out what to reclass, avoid hitting RCP, have low promotion points in s shortage mos, and if its possible go to a post with a low cost of living

Some MOS have a need in the civilian world and the more you look into what crosses over and RCP. You dont want a situation where you hit RCP before you can promote.

If you have the skills, I would highly recommend anything dealing with information technology. This would guarantee you a second career in the corporate world.

Consider your options carefully. You can change your MOS, submit a Green to Gold packet, change your duty station, etc. I was up for promotion as an E-5 when my Green to Gold packet was accepted. A year before that I was very close to reenlisting for a new duty station. Don't feel rushed in making your decision and be sure that you are planning for the long-term.

Which do you want more? Happiness, rank, or pay? If you are lucky, you can find a MOS where you will get all three, but then again, perhaps not. Are you aware of every available job the army offers? Did you know for example that there is a "Observational Meteorologist? (Not to be confused with a artillary FC meteorologist that uses a FADEC computer to direct artillary fire based on air temperature, mass, and density...they sit in the field with the other grunts, nothing wrong with that, just was not my cup of tea). The (at least at one time 93E MOS) released weather balloons, and recorded weather conditions with a variety of tools, including a wet bulb thermometer and a sling psychrometer, and gave pilots weather updates. The AIT was or perhaps still is in Illinois at a Air Force Base (Just because you are in the army does not always mean you will train at a army base) This is a type of job that can translate to the civilian sector after a military career has ended. Do you like to fly? Did you know the Air Force has actual flight operations for enlisted soldiers? How about a in-flight aerial refueling specialist, refueling planes from a KC-130 tanker? They travel all over the world, even the Antarctic. Loadmasters also fly, though nothing like looking out the bay window while refueling a jet. I was in a combat arms MOS (16E), and had I reinlisted, would have picked a job more suitable to my liking. I remember a guy who ran the NCO club, and wondered how he got that gig...I did not know there was a position for that one! I attended Drill Sergeant School as a active reservist while in college with the 95th Infantry Division. Good luck to you now, and in all of your future endeavors.

SGT Byron Labadie the civilian in my shop is prior enlisted and she gives me very good data about those different assignments you can get in the Army. The only bad part is that for most of them I will need more rank and that won't happen until after June.

Antonio,
The best advice I can provide is the same I briefed when I was in OCOI.
Visit the EPMD website, and do sole research into what MOS currently has "in and out calls." What the bonus levels are, what the educational and length of service obligations that you will incur and make sure your ASK is updated to reflect your current preferences.
Best of luck to you and thank you for your service.
