I eventually would like to attend OCS and become an infantry officer. I understand that picking your branch is based on OML points, also that officers that graduate via OCS get the “bottom of the barrel” choices of what’s available after candidates from West Point and ROTC have chosen and that branching as an infantry officer is really sought after. However I would like to know, specifically from 11As who have taken this route, about the slot availability for infantry officers upon branching from OCS. Also if anyone else also has an answer please feel free to comment with one.

Honestly it varies from class to class. Some classes Infantry slots are taken by the time we were half way through the OML and in other classes there are still Infantry slots available at the bottom of the OML. Typically there are between 10-20 Infantry slots with a combination of pure Infantry and Infantry branch detail. The vast majority of OCS candidates (70% or so) get their first through third branch choice. Put in the work, help your non prior service peers and ask your cadre for mentorship and you’ll more than likely get the branch that you want.

Follow the sound advice shared by CPT Joshua Sleight. You can control your density get, through and being commissioned through OCS. Some of the greatest leaders I have known were OCS graduates of their era.
