It's no secret, we're big on nicknames in the military, and there's some really great ones out there... so, what's your favorite?  It could be a nickname that you had, or someone you know, from a move or tv show; it could be a nickname for a rank, base/location, career field, position/title, weapon system, piece of gear, personnel, or just about anything else under the sun. Perhaps it was a nickname for a mascot, civilian personnel, military family member, or something altogether different that has to do w/ the military, military life, or life from the military perspective.  Well, this should be an absolute blast folks; so, feel free to share any related info, facts, photos, links, historical context, or just plain entertaining sea stories.  The idea here is simple, to share fun and interesting info and to learn a thing or two in the process; now let's get this thing started, so pull up a keyboard, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

when I was in the 82nd there was a private whos head was shaped like an egg, when he cut his hair real short it looked like fur so we called him "egg fur" so stupid but it still makes me laugh and he was a good sport about it, and he was a good trooper.

It was the first night of my first FTX after airborne school. I'd just gotten to the unit the night before and had slept about 3 hours before we SP'd for the field early that morning. That night in the S-2 tent, my eyes went crossed (but in my defense, they stayed open), my head started falling, and everyone: my S2, PL, PSG, SL, TL and peers watched me struggle to stay awake. And there was drool. My squad leader finally nudged me and I woke up with the whole tent in laughter.

Since then, I've been called Narco... as in narcoleptic. I love it.

You do sleep. Let's just be honest. I've seen you doze off in seconds! JRTC, in the middle of a conversation, OUT! I admit, I'm a little jealous.

Optimus Prime LOL.

A few Soldiers and Battles said I earned this after seeing me go from 0 to 60 in a matter of secs when ever my daughter came around.  I was a few other choice words as a Drill Sergeant, not appropriate for this dialogue LOL.

Another was Auntie, for always budding my nose in whether others wanted me to or not.....sometimes we have to protect our Soldiers from themselves.

Platoon Mama' my fav by far!

When I was in BCT, my nickname was "IBM" for a pretty good recall whenever the DS had one of his many pop-quizzes. When I was in DSS, my nickname was "GRANDPA" (never mind that I was one by then), for my ripened old age of 40.

Optimus Prime is a good one, even though Megatron was one of my favorites.  Hmmm...now THAT would be a good one, were it not that my ultimate nickname is Darth Vader

Now I had some nicknames for Soldiers:

Pumpkin, male Soldier had naturally fire orange hair and eyebrows

Get Right...self explanatory

Double Mint Twins or DMT, female Soldiers that were the same rank, same height, same hair color.  From a far I could never tell them apart (they looked nothing alike) so I would scream DMT and they both would answer.

Knuckle head....self explanatory

Pinky and the Brain (from the cartoon) twin male Soldiers (25S).  Was always messing with me, call for one the other would respond then say that's not me ..... FRONT LEAN REST POSITION!

Today everyone is Soldier, Warrior, Sergeant, or CSM/SGM!!!

When I first got here on this base everyone at the fire department started calling my "Hurricane" because of my first name being Katrina. Then once we got hit by Hurricane Sandy it picked up a little more because they thought my middle name was Sandy which is not. I will say "Hurricane Hartley" has a nice ring to it enough that I even put it on the back of my motorcycle jacket.

A1C Hartley, thanks for sharing, that's a great story... you know, you just might have to share a photo of the back of that "Hurricane Hartley" motorcycle jacket; again great story... thanks again for posting!

Major Burns, if you expand the picture you can see Hurricane a little better. I put in it Reflective to allow a little more visibility for on base regs and overall safety. Its not a lot but any extra is added safety.

A1C Harley, thanks for sharing and for including the bike in the photo, very nice. Also, great idea making it reflective, very creative indeed! Thanks again "Hurricane" for brightening-up our day!

I was just thinking about some other nick names I've heard and 2 in particular I find to be pretty unique:

-Had a 1SG call people "Moonbeam" when they weren't acting so bright

-We called that same 1SG Optimus Prime, for 2 reasons:

  a) He could transform on you so fast that it left you wondering what you had screwed up

  b) we never saw him or his truck in the same place...seriously on CQ I'd look out and see Top's truck parked out back but no Top.  Top would come in and I'd step outside...Truck was gone.
