So I was given this table by my parents. It has a thick polyurethane coating on it and was full of scratches. I stripped it down and sanded it today and deciding what to do with it now. We wanted it to be lighter in color but also wanted it to stand up to the elements (my children). Should I just stain it again, but lighter. Should I paint it? What do you think?

Nice table! It would be a shame to hide all the natural wood grain beauty with paint. Sand it down buttery smooth. Choose a stain carefully since it will soak in and be pretty much permanent. Gel stains are my favorite lately. Once the stain has fully cured (can't smell it any more) coat it with matte-finish polyurethane to seal it.

I agree with Msgt Adam T. That table is beautiful and it would be a shame to cover it with paint.
I’ve done lots of stain work, but it’s been over 20 years and things have changed.
My biggest recommendation is to take it (or even just a piece) to a quality paint store and get their help with which products you need to use. No, Home Depot and Lowe’s are not quality paint stores. You’ll need to go to a Sherwin Williams or Kelly Moore store. Those guys are experts and very well trained in how various products will react with each other.
Good luck, you’ve got a great piece to work with!
