As part of the FY 2021 NDAA, there are 10 U.S. Army posts, currently named after men who were Confederate generals during the Civil War, which are required to be renamed by the end of 2023.

The posts being renamed are:

Camp Beauregard, LA
Fort Polk, LA
Fort Benning, GA
Fort Gordon, GA
Fort Bragg, NC
Fort A.P. Hill, VA
Fort Lee, VA
Fort Pickett, VA
Fort Rucker, AL
Fort Hood, TX

This post is not to debate the merits of whether or not they should be renamed (it's happening). I'm curious as to what you think the specific posts should be renamed and why?

The Army had always been about tradition, honor, and service. My opinion is to not change a thing, and to hell with the cancel culture who wants to re-write history, and try to change the past. If we allow these posts that WE have sweated, bled, trained , and prepared for war at.

If we allow this what will they become. What “social justice icon” gets a fort named after them?

What difference does it really make? I’ve been stationed, or trained, at many of those Army posts and, I didn’t know or care who the posts were named after. They were all very skilled American military leaders whether they chose to fight for the north or south. That’s good enough for me. I think it’s a colossal waste of time and money to change the names of these posts just because some “woke” crybabies have their panties in a wad. And, I’m running a special deal today so, I’m not even going to charge you my usual fee of $0.02 for that.

I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding of this post. The topic is not to debate whether I or anyone else thinks the posts should be renamed, it is already enacted into law and is required to happen by the end of 2023. At this point, whether anyone thinks it is a good idea or not is irrelevant. It will happen, but now the question is what should the new names be for these posts?

CW4 Keith Dolliver - I realize that Warrant Officers really don’t have very much to do, except dwell on nonsense like this but, I really don’t care what they name these posts. The only thing I care about is that they’re going to waste our tax dollars on stupid shit to appease some America hating “woke” assholes. No, the fundamental misunderstanding is that there is a significant number of us who really care what the names are.

My Congressman and both my Senators have already expressed their non support for the renaming of these posts so, calling or writing them will have no bearing on anything. My time would be better spent mowing the lawn or something like that.

Are these posts named for people who fought against the Constitution of the United States? Took up arms in a rebellion that caused the death of thousands and thousands of U.S. military personnel? If this is not the case then why don't we have a post named after Osama Ben Laden or a military post called Fort Himmler? There is a change in culture in this country right now and there are a lot of brave men and women who fought and died for this country and our Constitution. Let us give them the honor of naming a military post after them. When you break down the American Civil War you have the patriots and the traitors to the United States. The traitors lost the war!!!!

You might want to read up on who attacked who. Several southern states declared their secession from the United States and, the north attacked them. So, your comparison to naming a post “Fort Bin Laden” or “Fort Himmler” is just plain stupid. These posts were named after Confederate Generals for the purpose of reconstruction, to ease tensions from years of fighting. It’s OUR history and, despite it’s ugliness, it should be preserved. By your simplistic view of “patriots and traitors”, this whole country is traitorous. Just ask King George. No, it’s not that simple.

Did the North fire on Ft. Sumpter to open hostilities? Did the South not start hostilities against the UNITED STATES? I agree with you on one thing, our history as a country is not pristine. Nothing is simple when it comes to our history. In all of our patriotic songs we seem to have the right words to sing or pledge, we just have to eventually live up to their meaning. This is something not so simple.

Why after Generals. Let’s look at our great soldiers that received a CMH for their sacrifice. The ones that paid the ultimate price in service to our country. Never forget.

Rename them. Some good ideas in the thread already.
There's a reason for books, histories, and museums.
How would you feel if Germany had a Fort Hitler & still worshipped Nazis?
After all, World War 2 (WW2) is the halfway point between the present and end of the Civil War at Appomattox.

In school HISTORY was my favorite subject I don't believe in changing it for any reason because if you give your reason to change it thousands will give you ligitimate reasons why your idea is a bad one. It once was said "The further you can see behind you the further you can see ahead". History teaches us the things that were successful and the things that were wrong. Adolph Hitler once said "He who rules the young rules the world". When you start changing history where does it end? Abraham Lincoln freed the black man from horrific conditions that went unchecked because they were considered less than human. Even though their sin pigmentation is darker their blood is still red and their kidney or liver just may save your life one day or visa versa. There is no difference between a black man and a white man, organically, the differance is in our ignorance because a black man does not know what it's like to be white as much as a white man dose'nt know what it's like to be black. At a cellular level we are the same as we are in God's eye. I love the post from SGT Jinger Jarrett she really hits the nail on the head and makes some great points.
History needs to be left where it belongs, IN THE PAST. And I know that I did not answer this soldiers question because he was talking about confirmed law something that has already been litigated and passed as confirmed law. I guess I just had to get it out. WE ARE MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERANT!!!! And that is a fact!

They shouldn’t be renamed. The posts and the personnel are named for are part of the American history. They are as part of American history as the gangsters of the 20-30s, Charles Manson, Jim Jones, the imprisonments of Japanese American citizens, the requirement of Italian American citizens to register with the FBI annually during WWII if they were in technical trades, and the dropping of the atomic bomb twice during WWII. Our forefathers were not perfect men and women and this nation continues to evolve. We need to teach history, when possible, in the context of the times when it occurred.

I think the Army has sufficient Medal of Honor winners to name their forts and installations after without having to resort to those who have taken up arms against this nation. Given an hour, I can find a Medal of Honor winner for each whose home state matches the location or who served with distinction at the installation. Personally, considering their contributions to the State of Texas, I think Ft Hood should be renamed for a MoH winner from the 9th or 10th Cavalry.

Medal of Honor winners specific to branch of post being renamed. MOH winners transcend all politics.

First of all, no one would have ever known that the bases were named after Confederate Generals unless some one mentioned it and stated they should be offended by that. Same with certain government and college buildings and I suspect the majority of statues.

That being said, there are many MOH recipients. Surely there is one from each area that has a military base that will need a new name.

I will suggest renaming half these bases in honor of Medal of Honor recipients. Especially if the recipient is from that state.

In today's society, the safest bid is: [a] name it after the town it is located in or [2] give it a number (such as, P1001). On second thought, move all military installations out of all the states which seceded from the Union 160 years ago.

I don't like the number idea, but I suppose you are correct with just naming it near where it is located. It's not exactly "creative", but the Navy has virtually all their installations named like that and the Army does the same with most of their Depots.

Some cities are changing school and road names of Washington, Adams, Jefferson, etc because they once 245 years ago owned slaves. So, POTUS won't work either. We, as a society, have lost our collective minds.
