I am a prior service infantry Marine Sergeant re-classing into active duty Army as a 12T. My questions are the following:
1. Where will I be placed upon completing my training? We would be maneuver support, so does that mean I would be in a Brigade Engineer Battalion (BEB) in support of Brigade Combat Team (BCT) operations? Would I be in an Engineer Battalion in a Combat Sustainment Brigade (CSB)? Both and are there other options?
2. Also within the battalion, do they get placed in combat engineer platoons or do they go to another type of platoon (for instance a construction platoon within a headquarters co, if those even exist)?
3. What is the day-to-day? Will I actually be performing my job as a technical engineer?
4. For those that are 12T's, do you enjoy your job? How are promotion rates and school opportunities?
I would like to thank those ahead of time that read my questions and considered answering. I realize that all of my question will be answered in due time, however I just would like to prepare myself for my transition into the Army. Thanks.

BEB would be the worst for you. You barely even see 12T equipment, nor do you do your job

As an e-5 or above there is little opportunity. It’s a pyramid mos. that means the higher you go the fewer opportunities will be left available to you. As far as doing your job every day it really depends where you land it’s a 50-50 split will you get to do your job or not, and you may end up in a technical detachment from a brigade a battalion element, or you may end up as part of a combat engineer platoon doing combat engineer shit. How much you enjoy your job depends on your superiors and if you’re actually doing it or not. I just got out after serving for years as an E4, and never once made promo points with 416 points. Had a Buddy who made it to E5 and then onto East six but he had damn near all the points in the book and I think he’s the only one who got picked up. Everybody else made it out . Went somewhere else. It’s a great job if you plan on getting out of the military, but if you’re planning on staying in you better look elsewhere. just a heads up from my brother.

Thanks for the heads up, I already signed my contract and head to AIT next week. My eventual goal was to put in a WO packet. I appreciate your honesty about it though. And I get how the command can make or break morale and the overall environment. As far as skills for afterward, that's one reason I am re-classing. Turns out you can't use any infantry skills in the civilian world, who thought they don't regularly use 240's out here. Thanks again.

I am currently going through AIT. I am only a couple months in. If you have looked into drafting and surveying and think it's interesting, then you'll enjoy AIT. I'm surprised by the amount of IET soldiers (and equivalents from sister-branches) that really didn't know what we would actually do. Some are surprised that we spend all day outside. If you can see yourself doing a fair amount of design work in autocad and surveying outside, then 12T is a pretty sweet gig.
As far as being an MOS-T and NCO during AIT, your primary role is to be a student. You are allowed to mentor junior service members but are not to give corrective actions (that is reserved for the drill sergeants and cadre). Other responsibilities are to PT with the rest of the students in the morning but our off-time is truly our time. PT formation at 0500, class starts at 0800 and lasts until around 1630. If you're familiar with Fort Leonard Wood, they have the MOS-Ts in the Specker barracks. I definitely recommend having a vehicle here. Other than that, it's TRADOC and all the joys that comes with it. Let me know if you have anymore specific questions.
