Oct 2, 1966. Recon team, on an insertion into the Rung Sat Special Zone in Vietnam, on an ARVN River Parol boat. VC detonated an underwater mine right under our boat, and I was blown about 50 ft into the river. Unconscious and underwater, 2nd Lt dove in and pulled me to the surface under fire. I was pretty messed-up, but alive. He was a new ROTC butter bar, but made us a believer in him that day. (And in future operations). Changed our minds about ROTC trained Infantry officers, at least that one. Don’t know where he went to school, or where he went, or even if he lived through the war. Strak dude.

With out a doubt communicating with superior officers that took intelligence offered as "real time" and allowed the exploitation at the delivery or very soon after in order to make a real difference.

For Thanksgiving one year while serving in the Air Force at Fairchild AFB in Washington, all of the single enlisted people on base were brought to the Rec Center and served dinner by all of the officers, including my own squadron commander, all the way up through the Base and Wing Commanders as well. It was the best Thanksgiving dinner I ever had.

I was very lucky to have served with some of the finest people ever created. The best moment I had with a superior was my first ever deployment to the Middle East. So many laugh till you cry moments.

Shortly after AIT, I was stationed at Camp Casey, South Korea. During the yearly exercise, my commander at the time called me into the tent and asked me. "SPC Buck, I heard it's your Birthday." I said, "Yes sir, I'm 23 years old today." Needless to say we had 32 brand spanking new Paladins. So, long story short. He let me give the first command to "FIRE!!!!" for the exercise.

A new 1st Sgt came into the organization at our hospital. He was calling each NCO into his office separately to get to know them. When my turn came I entered his office and laid down a packet of salt on his desk. He asked what that was for and I told him that if he was going to chew my ass out I wanted it to taste good. He laughed and we got along great after that. At the time I was an E-6 Tsgt NCOIC of the internal medicine clinic.
