Victory Gardens during WWII extended rations for the American fighting force. Does anyone grow a small garden for health today? Here's an idea from Chappy. Grow a Victory Garden and find a WWII, Korean War or Vietnam War Vet who is in need and share a portion of your garden vegetables with him or her. Time to help raise morale among Veterans, while at the same time giving yourself a healthy and relaxing hobby. Plus, what's healthier than fresh, organic vegetables grown by the hands of you and your loved ones? How about it? Bring back the Victory Garden?

I like this idea. I've worked gardens back home with my Grandpa for many years. Now that I live on post I don't necessarily have access to a personal garden, although private plots in the community garden can be acquired--the distance from here to there isn't easily negotiable.

I do like this idea and enjoy working the ground and eating the produce. Excellent idea Chappy! Thanks for sharing!

My Fiancee is a big believer in "Grocery Gardening". Therefore, she has a small garden on her patio. She grows all different kinds of leafy greens as well as cucumbers, cauliflowers, onions and jicama.

What would it be like to grow "Victory Gardens"?

Between the garden, hunting, fishing, and foraging I feed 2 Vets daily besides myself. In the summer I have 2 more Vets that get a portion from the garden. I trade some of what I grow with the neighbors for what they grow. And the extra seedlings out to Pine Ridge to help feed the families there. My grandfather was a WWII Vet and he passed in 2005. He was the one the passed on a lot of what I know about gardening and living off the land. He also taught me about community relations and that sharing/trading makes a stronger community.

SPC Tanya, that is marvelous! Do you grow produce inside during Winter? Or, do you live where the temps are mild? Truly, this is a fine thing you are doing.

I grow herbs and a few peppers when possible. I moved into a new place at the beginning of the year so a lot of plants didn't make it with the negative temps, but oddly the coleus survived and that's a sensitive plant. This winter we'll have the coleus, amarylis bulbs, and herbs. We're going to be redoing the garden area in the backyard and then in the winter the back deck will become a solar powered hydrothermal greenhouse. Then my dad and I can sit there in the winter and have tomatoes.

I grow fall and spring gardens and share with anyone that needs or wants them.

I'm getting back into herbs for health. I'll grow what I can, but first will buy packaged dried herbs & use them. Then, with an herb garden for culinary & medical applications, I'll be able to save seeds & share them.
I'd love to add a small food area; I've been thinking of trying to plant vertically up the porch wall. PVC Pipe is often used. Then add a fertilizer to the water. A small pump would be nice to circulate & re-use the water, adding water evaporated out.
W arthritis, I cannot get down on the ground & we generally have a short growing season, altho this Winter, it's been unseasonably warm during the day & freezing or below, at night. Therefore, it's possible that we'll be able to plant early.

I have been looking at seeds, just this week! Our wee corner of Paradise is notoriously difficult for gardens. I am considering a small hydroponic garden, something I've never tried. If it works, I'll give a portion to the Homeless, of whom too many are Veterans.
