When does time in grade start for promotion to 2LT in the Reserves, at commission or when I go to BOLC?

Hello all! I had a question regarding promotion. I enlisted in 2012 into the Oregon national guard and did about 6 years before joining ROTC. I do not get O1-E pay because I did not have enough active duty time for it. My question is, will my time in grade start at the start once I commission, or does it start when I go to bolc? is it 18 months after you commission as long as you have bolc complete, or 18 months after you arrive at bolc?

Yes, your Time in Grade started when you commissioned. Your Time in Service is from the time you signed your first National Guard enlistment. Check your total point count. If you have over 1460 retirement points as an enlisted, you still will qualify as O1E.
The regs say "fully qualified" to promote to 1LT. That would seem to indicate that you will have to complete BOLC before you can promote. That is a separate qualification outside of TIG.

Your commission date is the start of your TIG. Used to be for Reserve promotion it was three years time in grade. AUS promotions went from a low of 12 months to a high of 24 months. A friend of mine, back when it was 12/12/12, left AD as a CPT AUS and was a 1LT with 0 TIG in the Reserves.

You need to ask your reserve S1, not here. I commissioned in June and did not attend OBC until Sept and pinned 1LT in March, 18months from the start of my active duty. You are reserves so it will likely be different as it is unlikely you will see 1LT at 18months like we do on the active duty side. Reserves are a bit different and most on here will not have the accurate information you are looking for.

The time frame indicates that you still had time to complete Officer Basic before you hit 18 months. I was S1, the Time in Grade requirement for Reservist is the same as Active Duty. However, since he was already Select Reserve, his Date of Rank was from the day he Commissioned.

CPT Lawrence Cable - I commissioned two months prior to OBC and it was a reserve commission.

MAJ Byron Oyler - If you commissioned before 2005 and were not West Point or a ROTC distinguished graduate, we were all Reserve Officers. whether Active Duty or Not. The promotion systems in the Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard parallel each other and, with a few exceptions, have the same educational and TIG requirements. There may be a holdup on Federal Recognition if he is a Guard Officer, although that used to be routine and didn't take 60 days when I was S1. But regardless, if he complete his Basic Course before the 18th month, he should promote.

Time in grade starts at commission, however your enlisted years of service carry over in regards to pay for time in service, so (6+ years, more if you were SMP during ROTC). I’m in the same boat in regards to not getting the o-1e pay, but being maxed out for years of service is still a solid bump.

So should I be getting my O2 at 18 months since my TIS is already at 8+ years? I have not been to bolc yet, BOLC in in October, but ill be BOLC complete before my 18 months

2LT (Join to see) it depends on if you are active or guard still. Active it will depend on your current unit, and I’m not the best person to answer that one. If you’re a Guard LT then your unit just needs to submit a promotion packet. And then you have to wait for Fed rec. Your date of rank will get backdated to when you were eligible for O-2, but you’ll have to wait it out. For reference I’m waiting on my O-2 right now and I was eligible at the beginning of November...my S-1 is estimating I’ll see orders post in October so embrace the butter bar in the meantime haha.

As said, you DOR is when you commissioned and you have 18 months to get through BOLC in order to pick up 1LT. After 18 months your 1LT DOR will not be any sooner than your graduation date of BOLC.
Do BOLC ASAP. Now, I gamed BOLC and put it off a few months (still within 18 months) so that I could have POINTS over lap different service years. So I started BOLC in my 5th year, and finished in my 6th year. Not that it made much of a difference but I ensured I locked in two good years for a single school.
Finally, while you wont get "E" pay, your TIS will max you out as 2LT pay. Being a weekend warrior the pay difference in immaterial, and as long as you hit your 1LT and CPT marks you'll catch up.
You will however make BANK $$$ at BOLC and probably get paid more than the Cadre with BAH, and Per Diem.
