Hello all. I am currently serving as a 68B (Orthopaedic Specialist), but am re-classing to 31K (MWD Handler). I am due to PCS mid June 2019, and the first class following my DEROS begins about a month after. My main questions are - As an E4, will I still be housed with IET soldiers, or will there be seperate housing? -
Will be allowed to have my POV? - What will I be allowed to do on the weekends? Of course I know training comes first and foremost, but a little downtown never hurt anyone. Phase 1 is only 7 weeks, and I know I won’t get to see and do every thing while I’m there. From the research I’ve done, however, there are tons of things to do on and off post, and I want to know if there’s a chance that I might to experience some of what the area has to offer. If any prior service soldiers (though I do welcome helpful advice from anyone) have gone through 31K AIT within the past year, I would love to know about your experiences. Thank you!!

I was a former instructed for 31K phase one at Fort Leonard Wood. You will be allowed your POV as a soldier who is reclassing, and you will be housed at a separate barracks. You will be required to attend all training events and PT with the IET Soldiers. The same info will apply for Phase 2 at Lackland AFB. If there is no scheduled training on the days off you will have your down time.

Thank you SFC! What is the PT like and how often is it? What time does the day start?

PT starts at 0500 and is just like what you remember from your AIT. You will take a PT test while your there and must pass height and weight as a reclass Soldier.

Do IET Soldiers get any liberty during Phase 1 at FLW? At Phase 2 (if you know)?

I was a 'reclass' back in the '90s at Ft Leonardwood. Differences in 'treatment' for the reclass vs the Regular Army trainees :The reclass folk had the nice private rooms in the same barracks as the Regular Army soldiers and yes we did get 'liberty' every night that we did not have duty: HOWEVER: The workload and study requirements were so intensive that those who did not wish to fail and get put in with the Regular Army folks just did NOT have time to do much in the way of Sightseeing. Remember your primary Mission is not to have fun, but to learn your MOS.

Oh, and by the way, I did bring my POV. However; other than the trip there and to my next duty station, I just did not have the time to use it!

I’m a little confused... 31K didn’t exist until OCT 2013... how did you reclass into it in the 90s?

Thanks for your input, SGT. Like I mentioned before, training and learning the MOS comes before everything else, I but even at my first AIT, there was down time, but we found out very early on that IET and prior service were treated differently in regards to what we could do and where we could go. I’m just wondering is it going to be different based on the MOS, the duty station, etc..

What was the process you went through to reclass ? I've been looking everywhere for answers.
