I went in delayed entry into the Air Force in Dec 77, went active duty July 78, I served 4 years and when I got out I was an E4 Sgt since they have changed the ranking system, they are classifying me as a Senior Airman. How can this be corrected?

From what I remember my father telling me MSgt (Join to see) is that the "buck sergeant" was replaced in in 1991 with the Senior Airman. There is no way to correct this. But you know what you were when you got out and no one will question it. As, my Grandfather was a "buck sergeant" when he left the Air Force. He will always be remember to me as one.

Senior Airmen wore sleeve chevrons with blue center stars instead of silver to distinguish them from the non-commissioned officer rank of "Sergeant", also a pay grade of E-4. The latter was abolished in 1991 and the blue center star was changed to white to conform to all enlisted rank chevrons. Buck Sergeants were phased out through attrition.

MAJ Byron Oyler - USAA called me CPL for years even though I was CPL for a grand total of 3 months. When I retire, I won't give two shits what people call me as long as it's not late for dinner.

They just reverted back to the way it was until Oct 1967, when Senior Airmen became Sergeants (Buc Sgt). I don't know by doing this they have taken some of the NCO responsibility away from them. Does this now make it mandatory for a Senior Airman to complete the NCO Leadership School before they become Sergeants?

What does your DD-214 list as your highest rank obtained? If it shows "SGT", problem solved. SrA and Sgt are both E-4 so it shouldn't affect any benefits you are entitled to either way. Incidentally, most people really don't care what rank you were when you left the service. As long as you served honorably, that's all that really matters.
