I know in the Navy injury is the main one...that and when the BM is blowing his whistle...

Only the guideon barrier, with left hand across chest. No other time not even with weapon as there are two salutes that can be performed with weapon. Right shoulder arm. Left on sling right hand salute. Or bring the weapon to your center, four inches from body, muzzled nose high.

Except when under arms with an M-14 (such as color guard), then there's a left handed rifle salute. The Marines have that with an M16 as well.
