When is it correct to salute with your left hand?

The band master, he holds the baton with his right and salutes with the left. I miserably failed my very first SOTM board, but I answered this question correctly and surprised the person who asked.
If you are carrying a guidon, you move it to salute... not use your left hand.

Nope. Bandmasters may NOT salute with their left hand. ONLY amputees and the drum major of the U.S.Army 3rd Infantry Division, Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps may salute with their left hand. (Says this former Proponent Sergeant Major for the U.S. Army Bands CMF.)

More precisely, amputees who have lost their right arm are also allowed to salute with their left hand, AND the drum major of the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division, Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps.

You salute with your right hand. Period! The only exception would be... your eight arm is broken, and in a cast making it imobile, or, you do not have a right arm anymore. That is all
