When is it correct to salute with your left hand?

I'm not sure about a left handed salute? I do know, if your hands are full, you do not have to give a salute, but you still must show respect? Actually had a butterball get all over me, my arms were completely full, which it would have been harder to drop everything and salute him, he was livid..He looked like he had just been commissioned?
