Back Story:

A higher ranking NCO and I were talking when we seen an E7 walking wearing the OCP uniform with the green fleece jacket. The NCO I was talking to said something to him about that jacket not being authorized, and the E7 responded by saying that it’s still a transitional period and he can still wear it. I’m a little lost on this.

Anybody have an answer to this.

It's not a transitional period, and the OCP guidelines are for your uniform, not TA-50 and other OCIE. You're authorized to wear whatever CIF issues you until it phases out. My CIF is still issuing UCP rucks, IOTV, goretex jackets and everything else, and they will be for years to come. Deploying units are highest on the totem pole for the newest issue and non deploying and TDA units are on the very bottom. Not that long ago I was issued a black sleeping bag from the woodland set. You get what you get, based on your priority, until the Army updates you.

Haven’t picked my TA-50 up yet as it just came in this month, but helping other soldiers with the unit I RST with and it’s been a mixed bag of OCP and UCP gear for all soldiers I’ve helped do OCIE inventory with.

When in doubt, wait for SFC Boyd's response.

SGT Dan Gray I imagine shortly after it was invented. It was standard issue when I joined in 1998

SGT Dan Gray we still got issued all those things when I first joined. Old field jacket, old cloth fart sack, no long John's but polypro underwear and crappy wool gloves and leather shells. When the Iraq War kicked off the Army spent a lot of money modernizing things like rucks, sleeping bags and cold weather gear, bringing it up to what was available on the civilian market.

if your issued it, you can wear it. until the Army fully transitions over, you can still use the equipment issued to you. Hell, I still use OD green and BDU coveralls. It would be a different story if he was issued the OCP gear and chose to use old equipment.

Oh ok. Good to know. Appreciate it Battle. I’m not sure what the NCOs situation is but I did see he was wearing the green fleece with ocp name tapes.

Ive been issued 3 sets of multicam gear. And subsequently have had to turn it in. Rocking that ucp jacket yet again.

When the Army made it official that the UPC (digital pattern) uniform is no longer to be used, does that include the fleece jacket?

You can still wear the old outerwear until you are issued the new ocp patterns.

OCIE does not expire I don’t think so. Until you are issued a new piece of OCP gear to replace the old I believe you can use the old.

Fleece jacket is separate suthorization. Itll fall under the same guidance of wearing ucp cold weather gear with ocp uniforms. Surprisingly some posts still havent fully transitioned.

Seems like the question has been answered, however, I’d like to propose a new one: why is he wearing a fleece on the outside of his uniform? It’s an inner garment. Should be worn under your uniform jacket. Everyone always complains “Army cold weather gear doesn’t work” but no one wants to wear it correctly. They have a whole class on it and the science behind it.

To be clear before others jump on this: it’s not out of regulation to wear it as an outer jacket. Technically it can be either and it’s up to your command.

If you take the actual class though, they will tell you how to wear the cold weather clothing properly to keep warm.

I’m actually just learning that it’s supposed to be worn under the uniform jacket. I wear it as outer wear as well. But I don’t mismatch uniforms. Good to keep in mind.

I have taken that class. It works best as an inner garment. But can be worn as either based on commander, climate, how much time you have to put it on/off. It also has name tapes on the outside for the purpose of being used as an outer garment.

I wouldn't wear it but ultimately it's authorized as discussed.

I agree sir. After learning that it is still authorized I stand by my opinion that I wouldn’t wear it. I don’t like mismatching uniforms.

Everyone has answered the correct answer. If it's issued, you can wear it.

I'll give youbthe "Army" answer. Don't wear the old stuff if you can avoid it. It draws fire. Obviously, you can't always avoud it, but if you are walking from heated office to heated truck to heated barracks for a barracks inspection, then back to heated truck and to heated food court for lunch, you can probable do without for those 30 second walks to and from the truck.

I AM NOT SAYING TO BE UNSAFE. Just use common sense on whether it is worth drawing the attention. Even if an ass-chewing is unwarranted, it is still an ass-chewing.

My understanding is that the fleece jacket is an issued OCIE item and not a clothing item. Since I have not been issued the new fleece I am authorized to wear it with my OCP uniform. This is how my unit supply sergeant explained it to me.
