I need help. I have been trying to get an answer for MONTHS from the VA. I keep getting directed to a new person or placed on hold for hours. When I was discharged, I received a severance package. This was taxed and I am able to receive that money back, however, I need a w-2 to do so or some sort of tax form. The deadline is tomorrow and I am desperate for an answer. The tax form is not located on mypay.com.

Was this money included in your income taxes for the year you received it? Was it on an LES or come to you after you separated?

It was not included in my income taxes or provided on an LES. I never received any documentation providing this information. I have called DFAS, if I can even get an answer, they provide me false information or don't understand what document I am asking for for some reason. Also, I checked MyPay periodically over time to see if a tax document was posted for it, still nothing:/ I got out officially OCT 2019. I don't think it's getting posted...

SPC Hannah Maxwell Go talk to someone that does taxes professionally, someone like H&R Block or another company open year around. How do you know it was taxed without any of these documents?

because the full amount is listed on my dd214 and various VA paperwork.
HR block wasn't really helpful, multiple locations in my area just tell me they can't do anything to help me without a tax form showing what was taken out. They won't accept my dd214 and a bank statement showing the amount that was actually given to me.
Another smaller tax company in my area had said the same thing, unfortunately.

It was also made clear to me when I was outprocessing that I wouldn't see the full amount because it would be taxed.

a copy of your tax return from when you filed taxes on that money should work. If you didn't keep a copy of your tax return you may be SOL.

SPC Hannah Maxwell - so did they take out taxes prior to distribution? You should have gotten some kind of statement or an LES on it.

Correct, sir. I should have received some sort of documentation on it, but I haven't (been out since october 2019). I have a bank statement providing the amount that was distributed to me and the full amount before being taxed on my dd214. For some reason that doesn't suffice. I have also searched MyPay periodically for months and still nothing...

Who paid you DFAS or the VA? As a last resort you can call the IRS and state why you are calling and perhaps the information will be in what they call a TRANSCRIPT.

there is a document the IRS can mail me, something along the lines of an "earnings record" that will show everything that was paid to me and taxed, that document will work! Thank you for your help!
