I have not asked my recruiter about this yet. So I do not have his perspective yet. I was doing some research on the firefighter MOS and so far most, if not all, said that it’s a very rare MOS to be handed and it’s not common for active duty military to get granted this job. Is this accurate?

Very, very small MOS, probably zero chance of this class seat popping up

I am an active duty firefighter. The MOS is very small and thus hard to get into. There are more National Guard and Reserve positions for our MOS.
Honestly, if you want to be a firefighter, Air Force has far more opportunities for firefighters. It's very tough to be a 12M as active duty, because some units don't even work at the fire stations. It's all dependant on what post you go to.
I've been fortunate to always be part of a unit that worked with the fire department on post.

In 4th SB at Carson we had the 12Ms in 60th OD in rotation at the firehouse and then sent them to man the firehouse at PCMS when there were exercises.

SSG (Join to see) I was the DCO 2014-16. There was a great process in place. Unfortunately we lost (off duty) a 12M right before I arrived which was heart breaking.

From other 12M’s. There’s not a lot of info posted out there. Before I joined I tried doing research but there’s less than 300 active duty 12M’s in the Army last time I heard and I didn’t really get any valuable information until I got to 12M AIT.

That’s about the same information I heard. Is that your current MOS?

I am a current firefighter in the army. Your best bet is to go Air Force if you’re trying to actually do the job.

I was a 12M at Fort Campbell Ky. Small MOS with limited duty stations but great training opportunities that transfer to the civilian world when you get out. 12M is not an MOS that you can make a career out of in the Army but definitely has its benefits when you get out becoming a Federal or Civilian firefighter. Have to stay on your recruiter.

Smaller MOS=harder career progression.
