I have a WOCS class date of 10 July, 2019 (MOS 153), and I'm curious to know what the fixed-wing lifestyle and mission is like vs rotary-wing. I know that rotary-wing guys have a HUGE range of both missions and duty stations. Is the same true for fixed-wing?

A lot fewer fixed wing folks, fewer bases that have them.

Biggest population of fixed wing is sensor platform pilots. We had 12-18 birds per Brigade usually. Of a couple different types.

Where do Army fixed-wing pilots usually get stationed?

You can go onto FMSWeb and look at the slots for fixed wing pilots. When my buddy got assigned FW and had to put his list of assignments, that's what I did to find all the locations.

Generally speaking, most aviation units will have one or two fixed wing aircraft so that means you can go almost anywhere the army flies. That said, the most likely place for you will be with an Intel unit flying a sensor platform. In my day it would have been the OV-1D Mowhawk. Awsome bird!

Wow that's awesome. I had no clue that there were even that many fixed-wing aircraft in the Army.

When I was with the Air Cav my troop had 18 UH1's 4 OH58's and 1 U-21. That bad news was the our CO flew the U-21 (RHIP).

Not true anymore. In fact, most aviation units actually do NOT have FW aircraft. Only overseas CABs have organic FW. Still true that most FW assignments are in Intel units, leaving only a handful or realistic choices with some other small options possible later down the line.

I wouldn't get to focused on fixed wing because if you get placed in the TH-67 course, your fixed wing opportunities are no longer available. They are trying to fix it. Unless, of course, you chose NG and are assigned FW.

I'm Active Duty Sir. Just curious about all of the opportunities the Aviation side of the Army has to offer. The way I see it, no matter what bird I fly I'll have the best office view in the world.

CW2 (Join to see) I completely understand. Flying is one of the best jobs in the world. Just wanted to make you aware of possibilities if you are placed in a TH-67 course instead of a UH-72 course.

CW2 (Join to see) can you explain all the differences between going 67s vs 72s?

LTJG (Join to see) I can only speak for the TH-67 portion of the course. The UH-72 portion have more modernized equipment but much more mechanical issues, so flight time is pushed all the time. They also get to fly Night flights with NVG's and cross-country flights (so I've heard). Which allows them the opportunity to select C-12's. On the other hand, TH-67 pilots aren't afforded the opportunity to chose C-12's simply because we don't have the opportunity to fly with NVG's. Apparently they are trying to change that. When a student is waiting for flight school to start, they don't have the choice to chose the primary airframe they fly if they are active duty.

Hunter army air field, Ft hood, Ft bliss, Korea, Germany are the big ones. There are a few other assignments but they’re harder to come by.

I would think with all the flags at Bragg there would be several FW. Used to be flags had a fixed wing at their disposal. King Airs, I think that I recall.
Used to hitchhike at AAFs when I was junior EM. Mostly got Beaver and Hueys, but once in a while a flag bird.
