Iraq 2006, then Iraq again 2011 but that was my favorite for the fact we were doing convoys and we had three seperate thanksgiving meals at three different bases. They went all out for meals those last few months before we drew everyone out of there.

One Christmas in Afghanistan, two in Italy. My first Christmas in Italy was my loneliest, as I was brand new to the unit and the Army, and I had very few friends and couldn't afford to fly home. The USO on base was the only thing open, and the hero volunteer who ran it always made sure there was plenty of homemade food and a festive atmosphere during holidays. I was so appreciative, I have donated to the USO through CFC every year since.

I had my first taste of being away from home for the holidays in 1995 when I went to Camp Carroll, Korea. It set the stage for future holiday celebrations with my military comrades. I deployed during the holidays in Riyadh , Saudi Arabia in 1998, Baghdad, Iraq in 2004, and Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2011. We did our best to keep the holiday spirit
