I was on call with the Naval Station Great Lakes Auxiliary Security Force. Needless to say my pager went off, and it was 6 months before I went back to my regular unit. I spent the first day at condition delta watching the front gate of the Recruit Training Command. After that was 6 months of training reservists to man up a full security force. A lot of our procures and policies went through a major overhaul.

I was prepping the #2 and #3 waste heat boiler systems to have some of the valves re-installed on USS PETERSON DD 969. I remember I was standing on the catwalk over the Main Reduction Gear when I first heard that a plane hit the WTC. I was down in Engineering Berthing to use the head when the first tower fell.

We were scheduled to deploy the very next week.

I was in RAF Lakenheath. Within minutes, Base CE we moving the 10-foot concrete barrier walls and establishing a single-point of entry. Double ID's upon entry to the base and must in civilian attire upon arrival to the bases. And then we were doing combat air patrols with one fighter squadron. The other units were gearing up to deploy! Pallets and cargo containers were all packed within 12 hours, awaiting for the "GO" orders.

I was an E-5 at the time in te Air National Guard. It was TDY to Fort Dix and it was day 1 of OPFOR school ironically. I was learning how to be a bad guy, a terrorist. In the background of the class, the news was in and we all saw the first plane hit and my school instructor immediately said, we are under attack. Pilots just don't fly into buildings. We then watched in horror as the second plane hit. I was in class with a bunch I people who worked at the Pentagon and I felt horrible at the time
Knowing they had loved ones who worked there also. I had a hard time calling my wife because everyone was using up the cell towers and the landlines. She knew I was in Jersey but thought that Ft Dix had been attacked also. They cancelled the school and sent us home. Driving home, we could see the smoke an dust from the highway. A couple weeks later, I was deployed.

I was at WTC that morning with my fire company. I had been off duty that day and heard what had happened. I drove down there not knowing what I was getting into. Before anyone knew what was going on, the towers started to collapse. My guys were on one side and I was on the other. Got buried in the NJ PATH train station under the North tower. Was taken to St Vincents Hospital after being removed from the rubble

Was between stints in uniform...starting my last year of university before gaining my commission. Was helping my dad build his deck when the news came on. Thought about going back in enlisted, but decided to finish up and commission.
