Where were you during 9/11? What has changed in 20 years?

I was Stationed at FT Lewis in 1SFG (A), we had finished PT and I heard about the first plane, I got home to change and saw the second plane hit. The rest of the day was huddled around the TV watching the news.

I was stationed at Ft. Campbell with 1-101 AVN REGT however, we were in Ft. Hood attending Unit Fielding and Training Program. We were sitting in class waiting on the instructor that morning. We decided to turn on the television and CNN was playing everything in detail. If our instructor had been on time, we might not have found out until much later.

I arrived at Osan AB as a newly-minted intel officer at the 51st FW in July 2001.  I graduated from intel school at Goodfellow in June, as a newly-minted 1Lt, and Osan was my first intelligence assignment.   For us, the attacks occurred during the evening - I had fallen asleep on the couch in my Q room, the phone rang, and my OIC told me, deadpan voice such that I'll never forget it, "You need to turn on your TV."  I switched on my box just in time to see the second plane hit.

On Sept 11,2001 I was on a plane on my way back from Korea to the States. We made an Emergency landing in Alaska not to far from Fort Wainwright.. Me being Infantry I called an asked should I report so that i can do my job

I was working as a Union Bricklayer. I remember working on the side of Conowingo Dam in Port Deposit, Maryland. The only way we could find anything out was by fax. Once the second plane hit we were instructed to start setting the charges that line the dam. Being it was a Hydro Electric Power station they were prepared to blow the dam just in case. I remember driving back to NJ and seeing maybe 1 car on Rt 295 and I 95.

I was a Drill Sergeant at Ft Jackson, SC. I was on CQ and caught Soldiers watching TV in the day room. I thought it was the news about the towers was a movie or something. It was a long night. My wife and I were dual military and my wife was about 8 months pregnant with our son. We were on PCS orders to Ft Campbell. Our life in the military as we knew it was about to change. 

I was a Major in Foreign Air Command Staff College with the Venezuelan Air Force in Caracas Venezuela.  I was the only American at the "Escuela Superior de Guerra Aerea" (Air University equivalent) and a student in a class of 36 (32 Venezuelans, 1 from Brazil, 1 from Peru, 1 from Dominican Republic and of course me).  Several of my fellow classmates and I were in the breakroom when we saw the news on TV.  The kind words of support and expressions of sympathy from faculty and students was very heart warming...although I was the only American in the whole school , I dd not feel alone.

I was pulling gate guard on Ft Meade.. that was a long day!
