What branch of service do you believe has the best professional working relationship between officers and enlisted ? During my time in the military I always felt that a strong professional relationship between myself and the officers I worked for led to a higher rate of mission accomplishment and espirit de corps in my unit. Now I am not knocking any branch of service down. I just wonder what branch of service do you feel has the better working relationship between officers and enlisted. Is it a factor in a motivated unit and does it determine greater sense of mission accomplishment.

I would hope the Air Force. Pilots who anger mechanics soon find themselves role playing lawn darts...

I was ARMY but worked closely with the AIR FORCE. I witnessed the most camaraderie between Officers & Enlisted there. Almost casual but still with the utmost respect the AIR FORCE has the best internal relationships.

I THINK IT HAS TO BE NAVY & MARINE CORP, MOST OF THHESE OFFICERS ALREADY HAD ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS W/ EACH OTHER AT NAVAL ACCADAMY.
NOT TILL CLOSERR TO GRAD DID THEY HAVE TO DECIDE NAVY OR CORPES.
SO HANDS DOWN ITS THE NAVY WINNING THIS ARGUEMENT...
THANKS

The best dept. head I ever reported to was in a command that had the worst CO (Horrible morale, order and discipline, zero respect for enlisted ranks, Etc.) so it really is dependent on who you are serving with. During your career, you will encounter some really great officers and senior enlisted as well as some that are really horrible! Can't say much about the other branches but I can say that in the Navy, it seemed to be a better relationship between officer and enlisted among the Airedales than with the "Shoes" but I was also in a smaller detachment while deployed so we were a tight-knot group with an outstanding OINC (that ultimately made RADM) but other detachments in this squadron that modeled the leadership of the skipper fared much worse so I guess I lucked out!

Lesson learned here and appreciated through the years. You cannot change those around you but you can look within and be the best damn sailor (Marine, Soldier, Airman, Etc.) and put the needs of others (senior or subordinate) above your own and you just may win over that surly Chief, First Class, or Officer to your way of thinking and life will be far better for you!

Does the ratio make any difference?

Air Force has one officer for every 4.1 enlisted personnel, reserve is 1 for 4

the Army has one officer for every 4.5 enlisted personnel, reserve is 1 for 4.7

the Navy has one officer for every 4.9 enlisted personnel, reserve is 1 for 3.5

and the Marine Corps has one officer for every 8.1 enlisted personnel. 1 for 9.1 reserve

It has NOTHING TO DO WITH UNIT. To this day I greet all former Marine officers as " Sir" or "Mamm" That respect and professional attitude is required to be an effective fighting force.
Guess that's why the every day Marines are better trained to go into hell if needed. U S Army Rangers know what I'm talking about. They are the only Army troops that I have seen that are NOT on a first name basis

That's 100% untrue. You must not have served in a joint operations with other services.

I have served in joint operations overseas
Marines, Army,Navyand Air Force to be exact
And on more than one time
Doing Extractions of supposed VIPS , very high intense Security operations and Recon work
One time I heard an army Capt. Give an order to his SSGT who then call the officer by name and told him to go to hell that he was not going to do it ,
So we Marines took an extra squad with us to cover our backs because we had no clue if these two friends had made up , that was at the end of Nam ,
At Camp David I saw the same between army, Air Force and navy , the U S Marine Security Force was happy to know those people were not doing any security work where they needed rifles or pistols ,
You can not be on a first name basis and be a competent fighting force. Period
Any officer who ever called me by my first name , I immediately informed them my first name is My rank then my last name
No exceptions. And for info reasons. No Marine officer ever did , only Army and Air Force officers in DC did

A superior officer can call you by first name if he wishes but it usually is not appropriate. I have this done while I was in the Army with our Brigade Commander who would call his cmd driver by his first name. It all depends on the circumstances.

It's when the first name is used by a lower ranked individual towards a higher ranked NCO or Officer where an issue arises.

I understand your officer can but,
but it's still not a professional way to be ,
I earned my rank and as a Marine I insist that my rank be honored , the Marines are a bit different We uphold tradition and self respect very high , my sons are all E-8 and E-9 all still in the Marine Corps , they all will not refer to any other junior or senior personnel by first name , now with other Marines at or nearest to they're rank off duty. ! Yes. But that's it

I agree with many of the other posts on the thread that it is unit dependent.

Though I will say that from having grown up with my dad being in the Coast Guard and now with my brother as an officer in the Coast Guard, the working relationship that both of them have had from opposite sides of the coin being very similar, the Coast Guard takes it by a mile.

As a Coast Guard Auxiliarist, I work with the Coast Guard gold side, and feel they have the best. Perhaps being the smallest service and doing"real world" missions on a daily basis helps, but I seem to see the most mutual respect up and down the ladder in the Coast Guard.
