My window just opened up and it's time to pick where I want to go again, currently FT Carson not a big fan of the state nor the post. I did have the idea to submit an SFAB packet and go back to JBLM but would like to be a squad leader a little longer before I jump ship. Where do you think an 11B married with four kids should go? There's Campbell, Riley, Hood, and Bliss any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Three out of four represent small town living. Fort bliss is a very large city with a small town feel, but far removed from other cities. Each has its own positives and negatives. In either one you will train and deploy. I would look for a culture that your wife and children might enjoy. Look at schools, activities they enjoy and the proximity of travel. If you have a choice let your wife make it.

I recommend you and your spouse sit down and write out the things that you like to do as a family. Write down what you want from the school system and take into consideration that your spouse may want to work. Research each area to include the surrounding areas and see which checks the most boxes. The optempo at each base will go up and down because that is life in the military. Goodluck.

I’m at hood, and I’ll tell you right now if you want family time stay away from here. As an 11B our optempo has been stupid high.

Which duty station should I go to next between Campbell, Riley, Hood, and Bliss?

You should go to the broadening assignment you need. Whether it's Recruiter, Drill, SFAB, Instructor, or AC/RC, you need a Force Generating assignment.

The base housing on Hood varies on what part of the post you're on. And I've known some guys to wait up to six months to get a house, and some get it the day they arrive. Parts of Killeen are pretty rough, some parts are very nice. As an infantryman you'll most likely go to 3CR, they deployed every other year until this year. The installation like every place is what you make of it. You have Austin, Dallis and Houston not too far away, the Gulf is about four hours away, Temple and Harker Heights are some nice places close by. Lot of fun places to go, lot of good places to eat.

That's it exactly. You have options at Fort Hood and they don't necessarily have to be on base housing. Housing is Affordable in the Fort Hood area including Harker Heights and Copperas Cove. The people are friendly and you have Stillhouse Lake you can go to or you can actually go out to the Army's record area at Lake Belton. Just take the East Range Road on up and make a right and follow it over. It's a nice place to play. You don't need to drive 4 hours to the gulf but you could if you wanted to. Fort Hood is in the center of Texas and if you're looking at doing College the central Texas college is right there. Like anywhere, home is where you are happy. The humidity at Fort Hood is not as bad as it is it Fort Campbell or Fort Bragg. But with the air conditioning it's bearable. It does get hot in Texas but it's usually a dry heat. I enjoyed my time there very much. I wish I had re-enlisted one more time and gone back. Right now it's my prayer that once we get through the medical issues that we're dealing with I can move up around Lake Belton and chill. There's only occasional artillery fire. LOL.

I have met many, many soldiers who had been assigned to Hood. Only 1 enjoyed his time there.

That's pretty consistent to what I've heard for the last six years guess nothing has changed must be a cultural thing.

It’s been a little over a year since I did it, but it was pretty easy. I know they’re struggling to fill slots. It’s very beneficial for your career as well. Working within a small team and receiving the training we get is pretty top notch, for forscom standards. Since you’re already a SSG, if placed on a team you’d be either be Training Advisor, Senior Support Advisor, or you’d be Senior Ops AdvisorSSG (Join to see)

Since you’re at Hood, head over to 16th street and stop by BDE HQ. They’re all rear D and I guarantee they’ll help you out and answer any questions.

SSG (Join to see) ah ok I misunderstood. When I went through it was pretty simple. A MOS test, soldier proficiency test - both written, team building exercises, a pt test, 5 mile ruck, and the interview with SFAB leaders from various brigades. That’s where you find out if you’re selected or not. Overall it was 5 days, 1st day admin stuff, last day flew back to home station.

Been to Bliss and aside from the nice little px area there’s not a whole lot going on, Campbell on the other hand is great, close to Nashville close to Chattanooga and Memphis even STL is only 3 hours away and we thoroughly enjoyed it
