Life member VFW. A good place for my era. There is a movement afoot to start a new association more relative to post Vietnam. More support with less/no self medicating. I'm a supporter of such a group as I no longer wish to sit around and drink all the time.

That is the reason I had an issue with the VFW. When I went in it was a bunch of veterans just sitting around and drinking. The atmosphere didn't fit what i am looking for in a community/association. I am looking for one that promotes a healthier lifestyle, and it sounds like this movement will help the VFW or association for the better.

As a Navigator with Peak Military Care Network (PMCN) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, I am constantly making connections with local organizations to help military families. I just recently met with local chapters of VFW in my area and spoke to their managers about the perception that Post 9/11 vets have of these organizations, which quite honestly is simply sitting around drinking and smoking cigars. It is safe to say that Post 9/11 vets want to be involved with the community and stay proactive through physical activities while maintaining camaraderie. There is an effort to change this perception of VFWs and American Legions. I heard that the VFW in Denver has employed Post 9/11 vets in an effort to evolve their organization before they end up phasing out.
The organization/ non-profits I am involved with include:
Wounded Warrior Project (WWP): email list on different events to participate in free of charge. My wife and I attended some events, no complaints.
Army Wounded Warrior (AW2): email lists with local events and employment opportunities
American Legion: just enrolled recently waiting to see how this will help
Team Red, White, and Blue: vets and civilian supporters getting together for runs, hiking, etc
Big Brothers of Pikes Peak: events and mentor children. In a sports buddy program with military child
Hire Heroes USA: help translate military experience and qualifications to a professional civilian resume. Help with employment- networking events
Operation TBI Freedom: assistance with transitioning and managing health concerns
Vet Centers: Help with counseling (marital, behavioral health, etc..) instead of waiting for months for VA
-------------These are just some. If you know anyone in Colorado Springs send them my contact so I can point them in the right direction. i do hope that VFWs and American Legions do more to appeal to Post 9/11 vets. I really would hate to see them disappear.

Just Rallypoint.com, and I was separated as of Feb, 2015. I don't get along with many veterans so I have yet to join any organizations.

Not posting this as an anti-VFW thing, but just where younger veterans are going towards.

SSG Bethany Viglietta - I also found this older discussion. There are two linked articles in it that you may find interesting also about current issues with modernizing our traditional VSO's.

Just the VFW, I joined in Korea because they were friendly and had a bar. I bought a life membership because i believe in what they do.

I haven't joined others because i haven't made an effort to and they have not made an effort to find me.

I am not currently active in any post because my life is pretty full with 3 kids.

Thanks! I am looking for one since I will be out in November and want to continue my service while interacting with our brothers and sisters in arms. My biggest thing is being a member of the community. Can totally understand 3 kids taking up much of your life :) I just have a couple of large dogs and a husband.

SSG Bethany Viglietta - I would try them all, every group in every community will offer different opportunities for YOU. Find one where you get along with the members and they will help push you as well as things you believe in. I have been active in great and very bad VFW Posts, and im sure there are both of all the other groups as well.

SSG Ed Mikus - Thanks so much! I think I will be group surfing very soon to find one that fits me. Maybe I will try the various local posts as well. Didn't even think about the fact they all may be run a little differently.

You should go visit the local VFWs in your area. Some may highlight other activities and causes besides visiting the bar
