I had a mentor before going in who gave me good advice throughout my career. Although we never served together, I know his insights helped me more than he probably ever knew.

While serving on the James Monroe another MSCM(SS) came aboard and could not fathom why I had not been advanced to E-7 as yet. He asked what he could to help me. I related not receiving any navy achievement medals as yet or walk on water evals. He submitted evals he felt I deserved and this writer was advanced to E-7, first increment. I will never forget MSCM(SS) Orvis Baker. If anyone knows how to contact his family please advise me. Unfortunately, he has passed away.

In 1964 as a new Lt was assigned as Supply Officer for the Army's largest field medical unit without any special training. The TOE called for a Major or Captain. MSGT Robert Medvedeff became a mentor and friend. In the Spring of 1965 we became part of a team involved with the deployment of medical units to Viet Nam. In Sept 1966 I was awarded the first of two commendation. God bless the NCO's!
