I am going to beak it down for everyone how to address these spacific individuals: If a Master Sergeant has the diamond he is a First Sergeant and addressed as such or TOP because he is the highest enlisted Soldier in your unit. If there is a Master Sergeant without a Diamond they are addressed as Sergeant (not MSG, only if you are talking to someone else and specifying them by rank held). If there is a Sergeant First Class and they are acting as a First Sergeant they are addressed and Sergeant, not First Sergeant because they do not hold that specific rank, also acceptable for SFC is TOP because he is the highest enlisted Soldier in your unit if they are acting in that position. This Military Customs and Courtesies class is complete.

If I remember correctly we soldiers address anyone filling the billet of 1st Sergeant as 1st Sergeant no matter what their rank. When they first organized A Btry 5th 52 ADA our senior NCO was a Staff Sergeant filling the 1st Sergeants slot, so he was due recognition as the 1st Sergeant.

SFC B. I just re-read your post, and with the exceptions of spelling it out laser specific I said essentially the same thing you did. Voting me down was wrong and you know it!

Power tripping......I've seen it far too many times to count. If you're not rocking a diamond then no 1SG for you.

I believe you have to look at it very simple yes you need that MSG or E7P to get the diamond but you also need the position as well they are hand in hand and the MSG can always leave the company the diamond position will always stay therefore you must give the Soldier and the position the same respect.

Allow me to clear the air. I've been in units and worked with units who were not authorized a 1SG but authorized a Detatchment Sergeant (E-7) but are adamant they be addressed as 1SG. Correct me if Im wrong, but if you are a detatchment sgt then I address you as Sergeant *insert name*? Thats how I always addressed NCOs and ran into few issues.

SGT Jones,
It really boils down to the MTOE. If the Army wants the top slot a First Sergeant slot they will label it as such on the unit MTOE. It they label is as Detachment NCOIC and it is a SFC slot then they should be addressed as Sergeant.
The only issue you will see are SFCs in a NCOIC slot thinking they are First Sergeants and want to be called that. That is not the case and I will quickly deflate their balloon for them and get them back to reality.
