Both groups do a great job of supporting military members past and present. Who do you feel is a better group for you and why?

Joined the VFW right after going on terminal leave and transferred to the Tupelo, MS post. Any veterans organization is always good not only for us, but the local community as well

In hindsight I guess I wonder why I became a life member of the VFW. There aren't any real issues I'm concerned about that need the VFW to address and we don't have a real VFW hall anywhere nearby to where I live. My mother and father, both vets of WWII, were in the American Legion but I don't recall either of them ever attending a meeting or related event.

I became a lifetime member when I retired. There aren't many Coasties in the VFW - probably because many don't know that they could qualify to join.

Have been a Life Member of the VFW since returning from Desert Storm. I have been in the Legion on an off. Did not have the time to commit to all the local post wanted, something had to give. Will probably join back up at some point.

I have been a member of the VFW since the 90s! When I was working as a contractor overseas back in the 90s. VFW was the only Veteran's organization represented then. I have held several positions in the VFW since then. I am currently the Senior Vice for VFW Post 9770, Brownstown, IL
I am also a member of the American Legion, Post 95 in Vandalia, IL. I just recently accepted the position of Post Athletic Officer, mainly dealing with Legion Baseball.

Neither, live in the boonies. Closest is about 20 miles, never thought much about it.

I joined the VFW because I believed that it was an important organization that advocates on behalf of combat veteran issues.
I joined the American Legion because I honestly believed that they were better at addressing the VA debacle over the past year and they have a more active post locally.

I'm a member of the American Legion, but also a member of the Marine Corps League.

Hey, I'm in Apache Junction also. Been here for 4 1/2 years, over 40 years in the west valley.
I'm not a member of either but I've thought about it. I did however, bartend at an American legion post for a couple of months.

Sgt Packy Flickinger I'll add you as a contact as soon as I am allowed to add more. They are always looking for part time bartenders at the 7968 post (the one behind Wells Fargo)

I belong to both, but I am perplexed. I was a lucky SOB, I spent 15 years in the Infantry and 12 years in MI and was NEVER deployed. I was either in a unit that was critical or in a position that was. I am eligible for the VFW for my service in Berlin, I did not choose to be eligible, but am. I eel unworthy because I did not serve in combat.

Ernest, I can somewhat relate but for a different reason. My VFW post is mostly made up of older male veterans. The women are mostly spouses or women's auxiliary. There aren't too many young female veteran members that spend time there. I did deploy overseas twice and I was not in combat, which was also not the norm because my group deployed right after 9-11-01, before there was much of a fight in Iraq or Afghanistan. I'm certainly not going to downplay my contribution to the warfighting effort because I didn't have to pull a gun on anyone much less carry a weapon. If they accept your membership consider it an honor, no matter where you were needed.

CW2 Ernest Krutzsch Secure that lip Mr! 27 years service! All that wisdom and experience clearly got relayed into your troops over the years. Yu have NO idea how many lives you may be credited with saving from what you passed on to the next generation of heroes. Berlin, like Korea qualifies you for the VFW just like you said and I'd be HONORED to share a table with you. Our post has a good amount of Korea troops and once you get in the door, you are family.

I'm a Vietnam vet and served in the 1st Division. You go where the service sends you. You stood up and offered yourself as a blank check to be filled out by the government at its pleasure. I respect all men and women for that so you should not feel anything but pride my fellow veteran.

I did serve in Kuwait/Iraq (convoy security during the drawdown) but I also did a year in Korea in '05-'06 which qualified me for the VFW so I joined up. I am a member of VFW Post #3442, Custer, SD. One of our older members served in Berlin, too!
