my grandfather served in WWI in France on the front lines and my dad WWII, Korea and Veitnam vet. They instilled a strong sense of patriotism, service to country and family in me.

The recruiter. Very persistent. Very impressive E-7 with Ranger tab and jump wings. He laid out all the benefits. No BS. I felt his nobility and honor. This was 1984.

Joining was never a question. My always just assumed I would join the Army. Just like all my family for generations.

I had zero guidance or cause. As a matter of fact, I said I would never join the military. Why? Clueless kid raised without a father and a clueless mother. God rest her soul. The decision was mine. A 17 year old inner city boy with a love for wildlife, hunting, art, photography. already proficient with firearms. Got a 100% on my hunters safety course test at age 12. Owned and respected a Ruger Security Six .357 magnum, Ruger 7mm M77 bolt action rifle with a 3x9 Redfield. I fiber glassed the stock so the barrel wouldn't shift as it heated up. Also owned a Remington Wing master 12 gauge pump, Browning 20 gauge over and under, and several others by the time I 16. Loaded my own shells.
With absolutely no attachment to the Armed Forces, I was open to the recruiter. Yet one of the best decisions a very young person could have made at that time.

My dad, from his WWII experience guided me to the AF instead of water duty with the Navy or sleeping in the mud with Army/Marines.

My paternal Grandfather was a career Navy man who was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked, and was on 5 ships that were sunk during WWII. My Father served in the Air Force, and his brother served in the Navy. These men heavily influenced my decision to serve my country.
