I had a friend who took me to his drill to Fort Irwin. I decided to enlist right then and there. I spent 36 years in uniform.

I had 3 choices.
1. Go to college. No $$
2. Work construction or the meatpacking plant.
3. Join the Navy get educated free and see the world. Sounded like a plan and it worked!

The fear of prison and assignment to a infantry unit in Vietnam. I had no money for college and didn't want to get drafted so I joined. Ended up in the big puddle anyway but had a couple years to grow up. Nothing patriotic about the military in the late 60s/early 70s. I still could have crossed over into Canada instead of boarding at McCord. Hated every minute of it but I went. G.I.s had it hard back in the day.
Far removed from what Iraq/Afgan vets get. You guys get flag waving, we got dog (and human) crap and urine thrown at us. You guys have sub on me.
