It is also good for keeping track of folks whom you've established your personal brand/reputation with and having a clue as to whether they might be in a position to help you line up for a new, improved gig.

As I understand, LinkedIn uses an algorithm to measure activity on accounts. The more activity (job search, postings, conversations, etc.), the better your visibility to those who may be looking for a candidate like you. From personal experience, the more I work on LinkedIn's site, the more recruiter calls/contacts I receive.
