Thought this article was a worthy ready for all of you. This is why you call me a "liberal", because I see the reality of what is going on and prefer to back the worker vs the corporations who are running this country:

As soldiers should we be concerned by all these matters? We pledged allegiance to the constitution and the flag of the United States of America. One Nation under God indivisible...
I believe this is a matter of distraction, and as soldiers we should not be concerned with civilian matters. Our concern is to execute the orders given from above. There are negative and positive forces operating in different nations of the world, and USA is not exempt. Do not forget about exercising your civil right by voting in this upcoming general elections. Deadline is on Nov. 4th.

I would argue that the reason why ordinary Americans have no impact is that most ordinary Americans are apathetic and simply don't care. Someone has to fill that influence void and special interest groups and corporations did just that. If Americans actually took the time to be learn about the key topics and then voted AND held their elected representatives accountable, they would have much more impact.

MAJ - I only call you intelligent, but if you're liberal I'm OK with that. The article is interesting in that it does make the point that mass mobilizations of effort like the Civil Rights and women's movements (and I would argue the anti-war movement as well, albeit to a lesser extent) have an impact that the elites cannot ignore. We saw it before (in the early 20th century) as unions moved from being suppressed to earning a grudging place in the power structure. Other issues like the environment also overcame opposition among the economic elites to be adopted by political elites, resulting in the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts - laws that have resulted in Los Angeles (for one example) having fewer "Code Red" air quality days in the the last three decades than it had in 1973 alone.

Sometimes these mass movements do not need people in the streets - communicating with Representatives and Senators in an informed way has a tremendous impact. One example I distinctly remember is a Senator discussing that he got three letters from regular citizens about atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons - what made him take notice of these letters was that they all spelled "strontium" correctly.

Thanks for posting this article.
