Who was the best leader you've ever known...and why? What made them great?

With all the talk of toxic leadership, it seems there isn't enough talk about the other kind. That ONE leader who is the example that you looked at and wanted to be like. My first Battalion Commander, my third Company Commander...both of those guys fit the bill. They had an air of confidence, a committment that was unquestioned and the charisma to bring their brilliance to bear. Who was it...and why? What made you want to follow them to the gates of hell?

Capt Daniel C. "Red" Cross, USN (R.C.). Yhe man took a personal interest and knew everyone's story and ambitions. If a sailor needed a pay check, he found them orders to do something. He valued mission, but insisted his sailors take care of the Homefront first. He genuinely cared for his sailors. His leadership has inspired me for years, and I look to him as my ultimate role model and mentor.

People first. It takes balance...and I'm sure if you didn't measure up, he ensured standards were upheld.

Oh yes. But he also took the time to understand whether it was a fluke or not. He wanted to make sure his people were taken care of because then we'd take care of mission.
