Simple mathematical equation. .....101 is always greater that and never equal to 82 :) have an air assault day my friends

Hah!
In my days (1976 to 1984) the 82nd did the exact same thing the 101 did on a regular basis. That being said we would parachute in on your helicopter airfields, destroy them, establish a foothold and follow up with more parachute drops with our own air assault helo's! Transport and attack. It would be a magnificent battle! Of course with the 82nd prevailing.

Just saying..... ; ]

Is this a real question?
Of course it is the 82nd who would win. The 82nd is the parent of the 101st, and therefore has the advantage.
And for those of you wolfing "air assault", you are lacking in understanding that assault by helicopter is only one aspect of the arts of vertical envelopment, and that the 82nd is also a practitioner of that particular art.
And for those of you claiming "If you want it done, call the 101st", excuse me but the 82nd is the one on the speed dial of the White House in case of emergencies. What other division has a mission to strategically deploy in 18 hours or less?

SSG (Join to see) - The strategic advantage lies with the 82nd, who can be anywhere in the world via parachute on moments notice. Rotary winged A/C does not have the range that fix wing A/C have. Hands down, 82nd is the tougher, better unit.

Well not a DIV but 173rd has an 18 hour readiness. Almost got called up for real world missions twice.

From my experience with both these groups; 82nd since 101st is too scared to jump and too lazy to walk. Lol

I beg to differ on part of that statement. I believe anyone that has been associated with the Infantry Side of the 101st will tell you that all we seemed to do was hump a ruck and live in the field all the time.

Who would win in a battle between 82nd Airborne and the 101st Airborne (Air Assault)?

Why is this a discussion!? We are own the same team! There are reason for all units to be here. If you've never been in both, or any of those units, cease this discussion and mentor your Soldiers to be better. We are all "one mouse click away" from being anywhere in the Army.

Its an interesting discussion on whether Air Assault operations has made Airborne Operations obsolete, Air Assaults make sense in todays battelfield, quick rapid deployment and extract of Soldiers anywhere on the Battlefield, Air Assault MSG

SSG Winkler, I'm not in any way trying to quell your motivation, but unless you've been in an airborne unit, airborne qualified and completely understand its mission, you and others will not state these statements. It seems the ones making these discussion are just they; never been there. The 82nd ABN DIV mission is not like any others, same for 4/25 PIR & 173rd ABCT. Those units pave the way for the others units to readily deploy and operate. No other unit can say they can deploy, at moments notice, within 18hrs., air deliver with all equipment, fight, sustain, and ensure follow units to safely land and do the same than an airborne unit. We pave the way so the awesome 101st can use those rather expensive helicopters and air troopers can do so. Do the homework brother. Anybody can be a Soldier, but it takes another type of volunteer to be a Paratrooper. You have to see the bigger picture, than that at the squad level or what Army Times sees as an opinion. We are all in the same fight. Not against one another.

101st, they have their own air assets to move their force. 82nd will still be waiting at green ramp...

SGM Mike Barbieri - Thank you. I do believe that it is called "unit esprit de corps." And I do have a special place in my heart for the 101st, since the first units assigned to build the 101st Airborne Division was the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment (now the 327th Infantry Regiment), and the 321st Glider FA Battalion (now represented by the 1/320th FAR and the 3/320th FAR, which also originated from the 82nd). I also have a special place in there somewhere for the 13th Airborne Division, since it had the 326th Glider Infantry Regiment. And I have sympathy for the 328th Infantry Regiment, because they went to a non-airborne division.
So, I'm a history nut, oh well.

I do hope you never lose your taste for them; esprit de corps and history. Having spent time at both Bragg and Campbell, I too appreciate the histories of the units that reside there. There is something special about the bond that Soldiers form with their unit. It is even more special when they connect with the history of the organization. I always tell folks, that the Soldiers at Bragg or Campbell aren't any better than any where else, but they think they are and that makes the difference.

SSG Robert Webster the question was who would win in a fight, not who is assigned to be more rapidly deployable...

There is no answer to that because both are so patriotic that on the battlefield they would join forces and be undefeated by anyone else in the world. You have an Airborne/ Air Assault Day.

82nd and 101st have vastly different missions. 82nd leads the way just as 4-25 and 173rd paves the way in their respective strategic AOR for follow forces.

That being said-

101st- for when you want to be "Airborne" but are too leg to jump!
