Why am I not labeled as prior service when re-enlisting from ARNG IRR to AD Army?

That's an interesting question, one of the pastors at our pentecostal church was NY ARNG, drills, DD214, all of it, and he can't get VA benefits, I checked, there's some weird provision that since he was never actually activated, or paid with Federal money, supposedly, that Natl Guard even if one drills, and he did during Vietnam, tough he was never deployed, can't apparently submit for VA benefits, I've been trying to wrap my head around that one now for quite awhile...I have a friend who was USNR, incl after 9/11, he wasn't activated per se nor deployed, so he can't get VA benefits either, and he got out of USNR as an O-4, I can't figure that one out either...I was USAF IRR, I do know my IRR time didn't could, as I'd never joined a Guard or Reserve unit before my total perm disability, that I do kmow is true, my IRR time didn't count, that I was sure of, honest, hope that helps somewhat....

I do have my NGB-22. But I not active quite yet. I am currently in-processing with an active duty recruiter. All my paperwork states NO for prior service.

ok - basically the NGB is the equivalent of the Army's DD-214 - On that form there should be periods of active service - if that is over 180 days, then I would go to your recruiter and speak to him about it - not a terrible fix - just an update to your files - Don't panic about it, just have that form when you speak to him/her

I completed a 3 year contract with the NYARNG. I am still obligated to IRR until 2020. I completed BCT and I am MOS qualified after completing AIT as well. I attended every drill weekend, every annual training and was also activated in response to both Hurricane Sandy and Irene.

The thing that confuses me, is, if you were listed as ARNG IRR, you must've gone through all the training for ARNG to begin with, obv...that being said, I'd quite honestly ask the local mil/vet staffs for all three Congress ofcs by you, send them Privacy Act (PA) forms, they'll need those by law to help you, then send them the whole thing, and let them do an inquiry, they can't fix your stuff, though they can obv at least try to help you get to the ones who can answer your whole thing in Army...also, do an eVetRecs request to NPRC online, get the printout with the file number for the submit, sign and date it, fax it back, ask the Congress staffs to get you a call back from the NPRC director's ofcs, call 86-NARA-NARA, look up the NARA leadership page, you'll see the NPRC director listed, they might be able to transfer you to NPRC to the director's staff directly, get all your stuff, admin/personnel, as well as med/dental, also, ask for both, then send all of it to all the Congress mil/vet staffs, so they'd at least have all that, as well, to document the whole thing, and ask the NPRC director's staff to query Army and/or ARNG or NGB about why you're not listed, if you wanna chat more, just lemme know, no rush, whenever you'd want, OK?

If you have more than 180 days of AFS your recruiter is building your packet wrong. Doesn’t matter at end of day MEPS will correct it if it’s wrong

Because you probably don’t have more than 180 days if active federal service fine. You are what’s called glossary non prior service

If you are still in the IRR aren’t you technically still in the military? If so that may be why you aren’t listed as prior service. You are still serving until 2020

SPC Jovani Daviu I'd check with the recruiter but this is my best guess. Your time that you were mobilized shouldn't impact your status as prior service - if you served in the past then you're "prior." However as an IRR soldier you're still currently serving under a contract, there's no break in service.

Prior service is defined as having served for more than 180 days Active Federal Service time. Reserve/guard time isn’t AFS unless mobilized. This is per AR 601-210
