From my understanding, if you die for what you believe in according to a Hadith (not in Quran) you get awarded when you reach heaven.

It really comes down to defense. If they die protecting their right to practice their religion than they shall go to heaven. (given of course that they have lived a good life) I think we can relate this to Americans who have died to protect their country.
If they feel it is their obligation to die in the name of their religion just for promotion, I think we can all agree who is in the right. This can be related to countries just wanting to conquer other countries promoting their way.
Unfortunately the area that most terrorists come from is not the most educated or stable part of the world. Religious leaders can use propaganda to promise eternal life in heaven, or wealth to desperate family members.

Half true. From my understanding, they actually believe that everyone goes to heaven after paying for your sins, and that hell is not eternal. Ignorance does not automatically send one to hell and neither does not believing. If one believes but doesn't follow, that is more of a quicker way to hell.

In the mid 1980's we were involved in using Madrasas to train anti Soviet fighters after observing that religion establishes strong neuron pathways that causes a better Operant conditioning of fighter that are more willing to die fighting is the reason why terrorist use it.
