We've always been divided on politics. That's the entire basis of the party system.

I was using the bus as an example of things that are no longer a problem. What is wrong with doing so?

SPC Randy Torgerson - Racism has existed for centuries throughout history. In the US, after the 60s Civil Rights Bill was enacted racists found a way to circumvent the law, they continued to practice their beliefs in a more subtle/obscure manner within the law. The subtle practice of racism has used religion to strengthen and advance their goals, then embraced by big money "conservative"opportunist whose interest is about control of government for their benefit. The politicization of morality by the infusion of big money, is the wedge that divides the country and the corrupts the political parties. If by "people" refusing to sit at the back of the bus brought social and a kind of moral change to the US, we have to have faith that it's by the same people's determination that we can work to heal our divisiveness even if we can't totally eradicate racism.

Natalie Tschiedel - Much of what you said I agree with and some not so much. In all your expressed opinions, lets not forget the people have a right to hate other people. What I don't agree with is that you seem to believe that racism is on one side while the other side is just loving and wanting to unite. That is pure hogwash.

Until President Obama came to office, President Kennedy was the racist president we have had in modern times. President Obama took over that role. With all his pre-judgments and blaming and denials. Lets face it, both sides loose if we eradicate racism. Think about it, what would the Al Sharptons do if they had no one to preach too? What would the ACLU and all the organizations do? It is in fact, the racism on both sides that keep it going. And anyone who thinks liberals are against racism are delusional. It is they who keep it going mostly, but I agree that it is both sides.

Being divided on issues is nothing new. People have always disagreed. The new breed of discourse where everyone dispises one another is something that hadn't happened since the abolition movement (look up bleeding Kansas). The new level of disrespect is tied to the rise of the internet. The older forms of media allowed for many different viewpoints as they needed to cater to everyone. By contrast, cable news and especially internet media only need to cater to one market. This allows for echo chambers to form. After enough time without hearing challenges to their ideologies, people no longer critically evaluate their ideas and assume that they are the arbiters of truth. Thus you get people who hate each other because to concede any point is to admit their own overinflated self worth might be lacking.

America has been divided among political lines since the Founders sat down and figured out how to make this country. Let's be realistic. There's always been a divide politically.
