My reasons are simple I always heard my father and uncle playing poker with other vet and talking about all the crazy things they did in the service...so from a very young age I wanted to join the Army which made my dad and uncle mad because they were Navy. I had plan to retire from the Army after my 20 years were up but misfortune took over and just a week after re-enlisting for my second four years I broke my back rolling a Cat D-7 down an incline...about six rolls. I was beaten between the hydralic tank and the control panel or levers. We were able to finish our misson and dig four more tank traps but the pain got so bad I had to go to sick call. They treated me for a pulled hamstring for nearly two months. I never knew how badly I was hurt till I was 21 yrs old when I had my first of 8 lumbar surgeries and one cervical surgery. the accident was in 1979 and I had surgery in 1981. Next week I go for another cervical surgery. I'm 100% TDIU since 1994.

I enlisted during the Iranian hostage crisis. We were all pretty sure that we were going to end up in a war and we thought we should sign up. My Dad was 27 years in the USAF but I wanted to join the Marines. You can imagine how those discussions went.

PFC Jeffrey Herrington - No cool story. My bio here explains my time in Special Forces. I guess the only thing close to cool is I took and passed the Special Forces Battery Test as an 18 year old slick sleeve private E-2. Completed SF training at 19. The picture is of me at my A-camp in Viet Nam, where I turned 20. I got shot up and medically retired 81 days before I was old enough to vote. Times here different back then.

PFC Jeffrey Herrington - You make me blush. I assure you I was, and am, just a regular Joe. For giggles and grins, here's the original, uncut version of my profile picture. I was using a broken chisel blade to crimp down the back of pins on smoke grenades to help ensure they didn't accidentally get pulled out by a wait a 'minute vine' or something while on patrol. My hooch is in the background and the picture was a spur of the moment snapshot taken by my team's Jr. Medic, who happened to be walking by. I know I looked young back then. I can assure you I caught noting but hell from all quarters because of my youthful appearance. I think about everyone I met back then thought they were the only person to ask me if my mama knew where I was, or if I was a Girl Scout who got lost on a camping trip. That was over fifty years ago and my surviving teammates still to this day refer to me as The Kid. Come this Friday I will be a 71 year old kid. Or as my youngest daughter likes to say, a 20 year-old with 51 years experience. My body got old, but I never grew up.
