Obviously, this doesn't not pertain to most veterans, but it can be easily said that some men and women tend to either twist the truth or outright lie about the extent of their service in the military. Why do you believe they may do this?

I saw it a lot when I transferred from the 82d. to a non-airborne unit - their whole sense of being was being challenged.

"We run more than the 82d!" - 'but, do you do anything else?'

Meh, I'm a POG with zero combat deployments in almost six years of service. What's there to lie about? Haha

Definitions:
1. Man, I was super cool, but if I tell you just one more ICANONEUPTHAT story, I will be the coolest kid in the room.
2. Chicks dig war stories, and since they hear lots of them, I have to have the best ones
3. I actually am a delivery driver for Jimmy Johns since I flunked out of boot camp, but since that is not cool enough let me tell you about this cool stuff I did in Iraq...
4. I want free money from the VA, and since my job as a supply guy in the Army Medical Center on base in Ft Lewis lost my medical records, I can fill in the blank spaces with...

You are right that this is everywhere in recent years, SGT Joseph Gunderson. I think that you can fit 98% of them in the definitions I list above.
The rest are mentally ill or in need of a tourniquet around their nethers.

Some people are disappointed in how their service ended up and they feel the need to embellish a little bit because they feel like people won't think they're brace or anything like that.

I don't think this has anything to do with service members specifically. People from all walks of life do this very well.

Some people just like to make the story sound better than it actually was.

Having been stationed in Berlin 75-77, and receiving the Army Occupation Medal of WWII, (Berlin being occupied by the 4 powers at the time). I and the others that received the medal, by technicality, are veterans of WWII. When I smelled a BS story, I would mention I was a WWII vet. When the bull shitter called BS, I told them to look it up.

SGT Ron Egan Respectfully, I think you need to look it up. You’re certainly not a ww2 vet.
It’s called the Army Occupation Medal. Yours was earned for your service during Army of Occupation of Berlin between 9 May 1945 and 2 October 1990.

I did what I did and don't need to add stuff to it. I have met others who did 20 years worth of stuff in 3 years.

I know a person that wears a "US Army Vet" pin on his shirt, but does not have a DD-214. He was a contractor...
