Why do you need a 110GT score to become an officer if you have a Bachelors degree from a regional college?

I have a 107GT score and I have a Bachelors degree in homeland security. I have looked into becoming an officer. The hold up is a GT of 110. I don’t understand why that matters. Officers that come from the Academy don’t even get a GT score so why should I have to have one? Thoughts?

People who go to the USMA must also take a standardized exam (the ACT or SAT) for admission. and they must score very high to be competitive. That's similar to the ASVAB process, which is simply a different (but military-specific) standardized exam. Plus, the USMA applicants must go through a very rigorous selection process for an appointment. So, it's not like they skate by without having to go through a similar hurdle.

Because having a 110 means you're more likely to succeed in a commissioning program like OCS or Green to Gold.

The GT is supposed to be the score that tells how well one can actually learn and comprehend new information. 110 is where the military believes that no matter what you are handed you will probably be able to learn it. Is there a big difference between a 107 and 110+, probably not, but then what is the big difference between scoring 59 on a PT event and a 60... Well, one is failing. As for why you should have to make that mark to go officer if you already have a BS/BA, you have met the requirement to go officer from the civilian world with that degree but it sounds like you are attempting to go through OCS; different circumstances, different requirements.

I’m going to take it, since it will be the first time since high school that I have taken it. I would like to study in my own and just take the test. I go TDY too often to go to the school for 4-5 weeks. i was just curious on everyone’s thoughts. Thanks for the comment.

SFC (Join to see) yeah no prob. I would visit the library and check out "The ASVAB Study Guide". It is what I used to help people study way back when I was in high school. You can study by sections with it and it has practice tests for the sections.

Same reason why a 180 is passing and a 179 is failing. Take classes to raise your GT score. My soldier did that in preparation for her warrant packet.

Because that is the way is was set up even back to WWII, it's the rule and that's that. Hell you can be an athlete and get a degree in basket weaving.

I understand this has been a rule for many years. My question was why? Just because it was set up in WWll doesn’t make it right. The Military has evolved since WWll and there have been a lot of rules that have changed. I’m pretty sure you can’t get a bachelors degree in basket weaving.. Thank you for the response.

The score is one way to standardize requirements across the board. While regional accreditation is necessary to keep universities covering a similar group of subjects and keeping education levels at a similar quality, the ASVAB ensures a proclivity for specific skills is measured at or above a certain standard.
