Why don't more Soldiers wear their full size medals?

I have attended dozens of Army Balls thoughout the years. And one thing stands out to me. No one wears full size medals. Everyone to incude senior NCOs and officers are content to wear ribbons. You might have one or two people sporting medals, but they usually are very rare. Why is that?

Every time I see pictures of Marines in their Dress Blues more often then not they are sporting medals. No matter what rank. I have seen E-2s and E-3s sporting medals during their Balls. Are they "required" to have them? Is it something pushed down by their NCOs, that everyone with wear Medals?

I believe that they mean more to the junior ranks. After a while, for some, I'm sure it becomes more of a hastle

I've started wearing them. I expect to be told to return to ribbons for anything requiring uniformity; however, it's nice to have an option when you go to the ball or any civilian event.

SSG (Join to see) I read through the comments on here I'm going to look for prices on the awards I have which isn't many but if I am able to get the full sized I'll wear the my to my next dress inspection just to see the reaction and to the next event I think it would be amazing for myself and others

They're expensive and they make a lot of noise. I'm trying to remember the last time I wore full medals, and I couldn't tell you. Many years before I left active duty.

If I'm going to an occasion that would be appropriate for full sized medals (usually Balls or some such event), I'm likely going to wear my Mess Dress anyways, not my ASU/Dress Blue.

FYI, anodized medals are not authorized for wear in the Army. If that has changed, I will stand corrected.

Sir, there is nothing in AR 670-1 or DA Pam 670-1 that I can find that precludes or prohibits the use of anodized medals.

LTC (Join to see) - The used to hand polish the issue medals (and their buttons). I believe now they wear anodized medals and buttons.
