There are veterans that take care of elderly or disabled parents but we can't add them as a dependent even if they live with you and draw any kind of income (social security, alimony, etc.). The max they are allowed to bring home is something like $750. Even if you pay for everything, you still can't add them as a dependent with the VA. Why?

The first "trick" is to show that their expenses exceed their income plus the amount the VA pays for a dependent parent, and you are making up the difference out of your own pocket. There are a few other things, but that is your first step.

Fortunately, I did get to add my Mom as my dependent, unfortunately, she died just after the approval came through so it was all for naught! However, it did not take them long to review and add her as my dependent! I’d say it only took approximately five to six weeks!! Extremely fast for the VA!!! Don’t give up hope!!!
