Why is porn so popular in the military? It has the potential of leading to much worse things like adultery.

The answer is simply, it's a way of taking matters in your own hands and working them out!!!

That has to be about the best answer! I laughed out loud, good thing I wasn't eating or drinking while reading this.

Been there.. done this... it's Hard sometimes when your away from home sometimes months or even a year at a time.. it better in my opinion to take things into "your own hands" then end up in bed with someone who isn't your wife.

Over eating can lead to obesity, drinking can lead to drunkenness, Talking to much can lead to proving you are an idiot, smoking can lead to cancer....the list goes on. If you do not like porn...don't watch it. Easy enough that even a caveman can understand it.
I would rather have them watching porn than paying hookers and getting diseases.

SGT Winegar.. you clearly believe there is some kind of correlation between porn and adultery. That is weird to me. I see absolutely no correlation nor causation.

2LT Earl Dean - I see what you are saying, but then it becomes semantics - unless you think that pron acts as a catalyst? Or is cheating the mere contemplation of doing an act outside a relationship even if you never act on it?
But that aside, you have your opinion and I respect that. I totally disagree however, but i respect it.

There is a correlation . In fact there is a statistic out that almost half divorces are porn related. Porn can often lead to the want to try something new . And when the screen isn't enough people act it out.. Not only Adultery but also sexually charged crimes.

First of all, the statistic you brought forward regarding any porn relation in divorces is absolutely incorrect. That is just bizarre that anyone would think this would be the case. Critique the source, or even better.. give it to me and I'll critique it.
Just because you feel a certain way about something, doesn't make it into a fact.
Second of all, correlation is not causation. But there is neither. Just stating a fact.

This is the most rediculous conversation on rally point to date. You have wasted everyone's time for posting this, I will not get that time back.

Since I saw a meme, I added one myself. Although to some it was a waste of time, I do believe this probably should've been posted in humor.

I don't know about most ridiculous. It joins the rest off the completely stupid questions asked on Rallybook.

I've seen worse in here, a major was asking about rainbow flags something along those lines.

Who says porn is always, or even often, a bad addiction? And who says porn leads to adultery? I'd like to see you cite some sources to back up your claims.

Any addiction is bad, no exceptions. But not everyone who consumes pornography is addicted just as not everyone who drinks is a drunk.

I disagree. I'm addicted to oxygen, but it hasn't presented a problem so far. Addiction isn't the problem, it's how much you allow the addiction to influence your life and affect your wellbeing.

Are there proven studies from respected parties to prove the connection between porn and adultery? Honestly, porn can be a healthy outlet for people that are under significant stress and force segregated (perceptions, adultery, fraternization, etc.) As usual, you can have to much of a good thing where someone may develop an addiction or have difficulty separating fantasy from reality. That or abuse of government systems would require leadership intervention.
I'm much more concerned about the rampant use of tobacco products, energy drinks, and unhealthy eating habits. Each of those will quickly hurt a soldiers health and effect our ability to accomplish the mission.

Much appreciated MCPO.

Agreed. Honestly I think about those other unhealthy things like smoking too. I wanted to ask about porn to the wide world of military just to see the responses, but might have worded it wrong.

I think it's because when we go there's so much bored time and you just are looking for something to do. Yes it can cause issues and just because you look at porn doesn't mean your going to cheat on your spouse.

As a Detailed Inspector General, I had a number of 'porn' related issues step into my office. In each of those cases, personal animosity was the igniting factor. In a fit of sheer petulance, an individual would walk over to the unoccupied computer of someone they disliked and bring up raw porno, leaving the screen lit up for viewing. Spotted by unsuspecting passersby, the computer's owner/user would then be facing severe counseling or UCMJ action. My team and I were able to determine the truth and hold the computer owner/user harmless. I referred the results of these problems up to my Two-Star. He immediately initiated a mandatory policy of logging out each and every time one stepped away from any computer for any reason. Best advice I can offer to any service member out there about the accessing of pornography or similar unrelated material in the workplace....don't.

Nowadays, that's even easier to work, sir. With CAC authentication being the standard throughout DoD, it's as simple as taking your CAC card with you when you leave your workstation.

Daric, you are correct, with one exception. The issue isn't with equipment...it's human nature. One gets up to make a 'pit stop,' or a quick trip to the copier or any similar activity, thinking, "I'll just be a second," conveniently forgetting to pull that CAC card or log out of the computer = wide open for access by anyone walking by - including the class clown who thinks it's funny to pull a prank like that.

Porn does not lead to adultery. It's all about the mindset in which you approach it. If you're a scumbag, you will be a scumbag even without porn. I think it's a useful outlet for stress relief not to mention for the naturally unimaginative it can serve as learning tool. Honesty? I think the military would perform significantly better when deployed if they were allowed to have their "outlets" while separated from home and loved ones. We all know what happens to people when they have to box everything up for too long. Add the stress of the job and environment they are in and you're just asking for trouble.

I agree. Honestly I just wanted to ask about porn to see what others would say. The comment I stated after the question is because there are connections between the two. Porn doesn't always have that power over people, but if watched or looked at too much, it can lead to blurring fantasies and reality.

This is not a fact. Some things can lead to blurring fantasies and reality, and that goes for movies and books.. but it only affects the mentally unstable.

PFC Ariel Granet, you have no idea how refreshing it is to hear a woman's opinion on the subject that doesn't claim that all men are pigs for watching porn. Glad there are still people out there who have an open mind on several subjects. Today, you're my hero.

The better question is "why is porn so popular in general?" Porn is a billion dollar industry. 86% of the military is male. 48% of the military is between the ages of 22-30. The biggest porn watchers in the general population are males 18-25. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that porn is popular in the military.
