Seriously I wanna know. Mainly from you senior leadership and your mentality when it comes to this specific headgear, or even as to why it's frowned upon in the field when it's clearly authorized to be worn in the field.

Also if you are just going to bash me or make smart ass remarks because I'm asking this question, then don't even leave a comment. Thanks

While in Iraq with the 1st Cav, I never saw it frowned upon. A lot of guys just wore their patrol cap, but that sun was pretty fierce on the ears that way. Not wanting skin cancer, I always wore my boonie hat and no one ever said anything about it. It was an option. Same with everyone else. Now, if we wore our Stetson into the Mess Hall, the mess sergeant had fits. That's right, Mess Hall. I never agreed with this whole DFAC thing. I don't call it resisting change, I call it respecting tradition.

Never been a fan of the boonie cap, just don't like the look. I wore one once going downrange into Iraq and Kuwait in 2006, also lots of guys wore them in Thailand in the 70s... called them "go to Hell hats" as in "if you don't like my hat, you can go to Hell" :-)

The boonie cap is a patrolling cap specifically used when the need for noise and silhouette reduction justifies the trade off in security offered by a helmet. But also some people look really dumb in it

Because some sergeant major had too much time on his hands and decided this was more important than taking care of soldiers and training them

This is my favorite part of aviation. We can wear this while on the flight line since its the only head gear that can be worn on it. So we damn near get free reign when it comes to our jobs but any other aspect its the pc.

It depends, when is cold outside, my CSM allows us to wear them as long as it safe in the environment you're in. --common sense works sometimes in the Army too.

From a safety standpoint, the soldier should be wearing appropriate headgear associated with his MOS. Other than that, I could care less about what type of headgear is worn in the field.
