I'm currently an E5 being put into a squad leader position. Will this count as the needed rated time? I will be going to the board at the start of my primary zone this month as well.

As long as your start and through dates are correct it will be rated. As far as worrying as far as you did it as a SGT do you have to do it as a SSG. Most likely yes... Making sure your dates are correct are an absolute must, you never want unrated time. Your positions won't be a factor till your look at SFC. They will look at your last five NCOERs for sure. So by that time I'm sure your time as a SGT will all be in the past. However keep in mind special circumstances such as battlefield promotions and waivers of time could affect how many ncoers you have had by that time.

I figured that. But I wasn't sure if this NCOER that shows I have squad leader time could be with my board packet when I get my first look. And if it would coincide with my future E6 squad leader time.

When you get transferred to a different location and your incoming unit reviews your NCOER that can effect their decision on your next position.

Regardless of rank as long as your NCOER has you rated as a squad leader and your ERB reflects your rated time it will count

Needed time for what exactly? Rated time as an NCO or rated time in a leadership position?

Well SSG it's Ronny understanding that as an infantryman you are required to have a certain amount of time as a squad leader for promotion to SFC. My question could have been worded better I guess. What I'm asking is would my squad leader time as an E5 count as that needed time for E7?

SSG (Join to see) - To my understanding yes it does count. Anytime in a leadership position will definitely help you in your next promotion.

Fantastic. I wasn't sure if more fire team leader time looked better than becoming a squad leader at 7 months TIG as an E5. SSG (Join to see) -

SSG (Join to see) - well if your COC sees fit to put you in that position then you have showed them you have the qualities and leadership values for a squad leader.

Nope, it does not count. You need squad leader time as an E-6 to be competitive for E-7 if that is what you are getting at.

SSG (Join to see) - Ya, you will need that two years rated time as an E-6 Squad Leader. Your E-5 Squad Leader time is just free labor since you are being underpaid for your position.

Yeah I wasn't sure that when my first look for SFC comes up this NCOER could possibly be in my packet and showing that I was a squad leader as an E5 would go with my future E6 squad leader time. SFC (Join to see) -

The answer is... in order for your squad leader time to count for the SFC promotion you would have to be rated as a squad leader minimum of 3 years as a Staff Sergeant.

What? Who officered that $hit up? Ridiculous. Leadership time is leadership time. It shouldn’t matter if your a squad leader as a SGT or as a SSG. SMH.

I believe it only counts toward your SSG leadership time if you are MTOEd to a SSG position. I am in a similar spot, I am a SGT(P) and have held a SSG position for a while. My ERB shows me assigned to a SSG level position, therefore I will be rated at that.

Yes, you will be rated as a Squad Leader, but in order for it to count towards the SFC selection board you’ll need 3 years minimum rated time (annual evaluations) as a Staff Sergeant to be considered for that board. A SGT(P) isn’t a SSG.

SSG (Join to see) I don't know what are the requirements for your MOS for promotion to SFC, but how about calling yourself a Sergeant going to Staff Sergeant instead of being an E-5 going to the E-6 board?
