I'm currently still serving my first term in the army with about 6 months left. I haven't really been able to find a solid answer that pertains to this. I'm currently an 11B but want to go into an intelligence field in the AF.

Look at PE and LS licensure, there'll be a state level version wherever you are with local chapters,...

You might also find this quite useful...from what I've observed, geodesy is rather inextricably intertwined with surveying, so, combining civil engrg wit getting licensure as a profsnl engr (PE) and licensed land surveyor (LS), along with getting a PhD in geodetic science, ultimately, would seem to get you to the top of that food chain, I should think, if you might he inclined in that direction....

First things firt; the AF rarely take prior service. Second; if accepted, get ready to be demoted to E2 or E3. Third; you must wait 6 months after your ets date before you can do anything with any branch. Ensure your RE code is a 1, or you may not be able to get in. Have you considered a new MOS? there are huge bonuses for reenlistment into certain MOSs.

My experience in the AF disagrees with you SFC. Especially in Air Force “combat” AFSC’s (MOS) where we operate on Army doctrine, we welcome prior Army and Marines. The reason the Air Force is not known for taking other service members is that it doesn’t have to. The Air Force almost always meets its recruitment numbers.

Everyone I know that switched from Army or Marines kept their rank if it was E-4 or below. Losing a stripe generally only applies to E-5 and above. When I was Active Duty Army we had 2 guys in my unit that came from other branches (Navy and Coast Guard). Both of those guys kept their stripes when the transferred over. They were both E-4’s.

I have never heard of the 6 month waiting rule you mentioned, so I can’t comment on that.
